Colors Gallery, meet silvy

Hobbyist artist, nursing program trainee, and Sonic fan, @silvy has been an artist since childhood and continues to speed along in their art journey as they produce many spectacular fanarts that any fan of the blue blur would appreciate! Before they speed off, let's take the time to learn their story!

@silvy it's time for you to slide some info about you to us! Introduce yourself! Who are you? What's your origin story?

Hi my name’s Silvy (after Silver The Hedgehog. He’s my favourite if you couldn’t tell) and I am an art hobbyist! I’ve always been into art since childhood, I think I got my creative thumb from my Dad, who is also an artist. I used to like drawing trees and landscapes, but at around 11 years old I discovered anime and then from there that was all I drew. Drawing Sonic is a recent thing believe it or not, I wish I grew up drawing him so I wouldn’t feel so weird in saying I choose to draw him as an adult LOL.

Speaking of origins, how did you discover the Colors Gallery? You joined us back in 2023 which makes you quite new still. What did you make of the Colors community when you first joined? What's made you stick around?

I actually joined Colors back in 2013!! I discovered it while scrolling through cheap games I could buy in the 3ds eShop, and it took me a few months to get my mom to make me an email just to create an account. I’ve since then deleted that account aha…. But Colors was my first experience with digital art and in an online space. The community was so awesome I loved that I could interact with people from different places I was so new to the internet at that time. I came back due to nostalgia and stayed because of all the nice people here. I’m glad the community is active again.

I guess it's no secret that you're a Sonic fan! What appeals to you the most about the speedy blue icon? What other inspirations do you have and what made you begin your art journey?

My love for Sonic stems from nostalgia. I loved watching my siblings play the adventure games and Sonic Heroes (I could only watch since I was the younger sibling…) But I loved the bright coloured characters, the cool rock music, and how everything was so fast as Sonic ran through loops and jumped on springs through the air. It was very impactful on my 6 year old brain. My other inspirations were Fire Emblem, TLOZ, and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. I think I started my art journey after getting Colors!3d, around the same time I discovered anime (come to think of it, I think Colors is the reason I discovered anime lmao.) The community really helped motivate me to get better at art.

Your Sonic artwork is spectacular! Such cool, dynamic poses and brilliant choices of color as well! What's your process when it comes to how you decide what looks good in your artwork? What skills did you practice most to get to your current skill level?

Thank you!! My process involves making a simple sketch of the idea I want in my head, and then grabbing some references online to help with the detailed stuff like hands, expressions, clothes, colour palette, background, etc. I used to practice human anatomy like crazy, but now I just draw sonic lol. Studying perspective really helped, I also used to have a doll that helped me with dynamic poses.

It's always a treat to see another user of Colors! 3D still around! We're working on getting dev kits to begin development on a Switch 2 edition of Colors Live, is there anything in particular you would want to see feature wise?

Colors! 3d users FTW!!!! Also what if you guys made an animation feature…. Just kidding (or am I?) I think a proper line tool would be cool.

If you had to choose, which artworks of yours are your favorites and why?

I really like this one. I’m proud of how edgy I made it. Its perfectly Shadow.

I like this one because I was surprised by how nice everyone was in the comment section when I posted it. I thought there would be trolls or mean comments bashing me for my faith, but it seems like a lot of people here in Colors live are supportive and love Jesus like me. He’s very important to me and everyone on earth whether they believe in him or not.

Favorite artist on and off the Colors Gallery?

My favourite artists here are @829 @Lady Ama @-Symphonic and so many others but they were my main inspirations back then. Off of Colors I like J. C. Leyendecker and Hirohiko Araki.

What defines you as an artist? What skill(s) of yours is something you've honed over that years that you cherish most?

What defines me as an artist is the ability to create something that can elicit an emotion. I like that as an artist you can make someone laugh, sad, happy, excited, and all types of things. The skill I cherish most is being able to navigate art software’s. I remember being new to digital art and being so overwhelmed by the Medibang interface, now I know how to use layer masks and overlays and tools that make my life easier. It’s like a whole new skill that took years to learn.

Top 3 favorite Colors Live artworks?

Asking me for my top 3 artworks when there is so many to choose from?!? I’ll just share the ones that I used as inspiration/reference at one point.

PokEmblem: Lucina & Dialga by Lady Ama. I really liked the lighting in this one.

& KNUCKLES by Vennex. Just an awesome knuckles drawing I want to draw knuckles like this.

Untitled by vynxpung. The highlights on the face!! A big inspiration for me.

If you could add or take away anything from the Sonic franchise, what would it be? Do you have a favorite Sonic game or media? Which ones are underrated in your opinion(I myself really like Sonic Heroes despite some of the criticism. I have a lot of nostalgia for it)? If you could make a spin-off Sonic game, what would it be about and who would be the main star?

If I could add to the Sonic franchise, it would be a Knuckles game with similar mechanics to Donkey Kong Bananza it would be so perfect. My favourite Sonic game is Sonic and the Black Knight!! Very underrated!! Even though it’s pretty janky the concept was so cool. For a spin-off Sonic game, it’s gotta be about Silver. He has so much potential, his time travel abilities could add so much to the lore. It would be awesome to give him a backstory too, we don’t really know his story. I could go on about this, maybe Sega should hire me. /j

We've highlighted some of your biggest strengths we see from you as an artist, what would you say are your weaknesses? How do you address them?

I have blank canvas syndrome. I open the canvas because I want to draw, but once I’m met with that blaringly white canvas, all motivation goes out the window. I try to overcome it by drawing random things like circles and random poses to get the creative juices flowing but most of the time that blank canvas wins.

Your opinions on the Sonic movies?

I love them. The second movie reignited my love for Sonic hehe.

What advice do you feel is most important for young artist? What tips would you share for those who want to draw Sonic artwork?

Don’t be afraid to use references. I remember as a kid people used to tell me references are “cheating” but they are crucial if you want your art to be detailed, and they improve your art! So take away that pride and just use references, all the old art masters used them and so do the artists in the art industry. Even tracing is helpful when you are doing it to learn (but don’t do it to steal and take credit for someone’s work.) I used to trace anime pictures or peoples faces and it taught me how to correct my proportions. For Sonic artists, I’ve learned that to draw Shadow’s quills, it’s easier to start from the bottom quill first, and then work upwards.

How has 2025 been treating you? What goals do you hope to accomplish in the near or far future?

2025 has been alright for me. I did a lot of new things this year one of them was getting into running. I hope to train to run a marathon next year. I also hope to get accepted into the nursing program at my university. Not very art related but those are pretty much my plans at the moment.

When you feel burnt out, how do you handle it?

I usually like to take things slow, so I rarely burn out. There was a time when I did burn out though, and I handled it badly. The moment I took a break; I almost never got back to the thing I was burnt out from. I literally give up on it. Do not be like me if you want to remain passionate about something haha.
