Colors SonarPen FAQ

How does the Colors SonarPen work?

The Colors SonarPen is plugged into the headphone jack on your Nintendo Switch. It does not need any batteries or bluetooth pairing and is perfectly safe to plug into your Nintendo Switch. Just like a pair of headphones. The reason it can detect the amount pressure you give it to the screen is quite unique. It connects as a headset and sends out an audio-signal through the cable which the tip of the pen dampens when you put pressure to the pen on the screen. The Colors SonarPen then sends back the signal to Colors Live, which uses that to paint a thicker or more opaque line on the screen. The whole process is very, very quick to make the painting experience feel super-responsive.

Will the Colors SonarPen scratch my Nintendo Switch screen if I paint a lot?

We do recommend that you protect your
Nintendo Switch screen with a quality tempered glass screen protector to avoid scratches on the screen. The tip of the Colors SonarPen has a disc-type nib which makes it soft and gentle with the screen, but the screen of the Nintendo Switch is made of a softer plastic material than many other tablets and phones. The Colors SonarPen should work fine with any kind of screen protector.

I already have a SonarPen. Will it work with Colors Live for the Nintendo Switch?

Maybe. Some changes were required to have the pen detected by the Nintendo Switch. Therefore, earlier versions of sonarpen might not be compatible with Colors Live. If you want to be sure to have a pressure-sensitive pen that works with Colors Live, we suggest you get a Colors SonarPen on the Colors Live Store.

Does Colors SonarPen work with iOS, Android, or Windows?

The Colors SonarPen is compatible with all iPhone / iPad and Android apps that works with the regular SonarPen. As of now, there is no support for Windows applications for any version of SonarPen. The Colors Live beta runs on Windows and has full support for drawing tablets like Wacoms and Huions.

Can I choose how the pressure-sensitivity with the Colors SonarPen behaves in Colors Live?

Yes. The pressure-sensitivity with the Colors SonarPen is fully customizable in Colors Live. It can be used to control wideness of the strokes and/or the opacity. You can even disable it completely. We think you are going to love the natural feeling the pressure-sensitivity adds to painting in Colors Live.
