ThatChurro extra questions!

What are your most random current fixations?

You’re going to regret asking that in a bit... One from a bit earlier in the year (that I'm still very much obsessed with) that probably hit me really hard was Rhythm Heaven MegaMix. I got my 3ds modded in March and it was one of the first games I downloaded after looking up different rhythm games for the 3ds (still disappointed there are only around 3 of them) and I played that game almost every day of the week for probably over an hour for about a month or two and I made multiple saves going through the game with different goals in mind like playing through the whole game in Japanese and another playing with strictly touch screen since I didn't know that was an option, touch screen sucks but that's what made it challenging and more interesting.

The game got to me so bad, whenever I hear the phrase "I suppose" you can physically see me fighting demons. One of my more recent ones from October fired up pretty good was Brain Age 2. I KNOW IT'S WEIRD BUT IT'S ACTUALLY REALLY COOL!!! The variety of games it has and the different ways you can train and help with different parts of the brain is crazy. It's educational and super fricking awesome sauce. 3ish weeks ago I found out that Dr. Kawashima (the one that did the research for the Brain Age series) actually doesn't get paid royalties for any of his games despite having one of the best selling DS games EVER! He did it by choice, don't worry.

That would really suck if it wasn’t. Instead of getting the money directed to him or his employer, the royalties were used to fund more brain research. He also doesn't have an interest in personal wealth so that is also another factor in the decision.

Though his view on games are both a good thing because they help with coordination and stuff like that and also a bad thing because they distract from things like studying and spending time communicating with friends and family, I still think it's really cool he helped create such an epic game. heh. I’m SO excited for Rhythm Heaven Groove next year!! I’m wanting to get the physical copy so I have a piece of Rhythm Heaven history with me mweheheheh. I’m also really wanting a new game from Dr. Kawashima, I have all of them except Dr. Kawashima’s Devilish Brain Training for the 3ds.I've been wanting an excuse to talk about this for a while as you can see, thank you hehehe.

Advice for young artists or general advice: What’s a crucial life lesson or piece of wisdom you’ve picked up that has never failed you?

One thing I will say, DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR OLD DRAWINGS!!!!! In middle school I found over half a sketchbook filled with drawings from when I was around 7 years old and I just went and threw them away so I could fill the rest without getting grossed out by my icky old art style which, yeah, maybe your old style is icky but it's such a fun thing to look back on.

I am a bit guilty with still throwing away or deleting some old drawings, but if I treated my Colors gallery like I did with those drawings back then I guarantee there would be almost NOTHING in my gallery xD Another thing would be if you can't find your own style just yet, try drawing characters from shows you like the style of.

You can go down in my gallery and see over 3/4 of my gallery full of redrawn scenes from animes I liked and it does kind of embarrass me because it makes me feel unoriginal but it did 100% help me form my own art style over time, especially with how much I was drawing Yugi Muto holy....

That's actually how I got my style because I thought it would be cool to try to draw Yugi in a Pokémon art style (also another drawing I wish I kept

When @ThatChurro becomes a burnt churro, how do they recover? When you’re down, burnt out, or unable to decide what to draw, how do you get back into the artistic grind?

Well this is gonna sound pretty repetitive but I usually watch Pokémon. If that doesn't help I try to find a free game on either Steam or the Eshop or just a game I haven't played in a while and that usually allows me to find some interesting characters that would be fun to draw or gives me fun concepts for drawings too. Even if I don’t feel like drawing just yet afterwards it’s still a nice break from all the stresses of life and a great escape from reality for a bit!

Grindset or mindset: which is more important, or is a mix of both ideal?

I'm not really sure about that one actually, maybe a bit of both? Mindset is good to get you in the place you need to be and how you want to take stuff out but grindset can motivate you to get said "stuff" done in a certain matter of time. I'm not in the "grindset" too often but the amount of motivation I get when trying to achieve a certain goal is insane (totally not thinking of my silly Gacha games while writing this)

You’re a finger painter—that’s amazing. What’s it like to draw in the way of our ancient ancestors in the modern age? What are the unique benefits and challenges? Do you own pens, styluses, paintbrushes, and other tools but prefer to use your fingers? What keeps you finger painting?

You'd be surprised how many people say similar things! It's mainly out of pure laziness to go and grab a stylus, I have one of those tablet pen things with the rubber tips I use time to time when working on a somewhat big project but 95% of the time I'm using my poor fingers.

I used the SonarPen the first year and a half I used colors but I broke both the tips and was too scared to ask either of my parents to get new tips as well as the fact I got my screen badly damaged from the pen. I probably should've gotten a screen protector, I don't really know why I didn't think of it sooner but never fear, I have one now (though I'm a little too late for it).

Some pros to drawing with my finger would be not having to worry about grabbing a pen, losing it, or just forgetting to bring it whenever you're in the mood to draw anything because when I used to rely on the SonarPen I would see that happening a lot xD A con I would say (on my part) would be the constant pains I get in my hands when drawing.

I can't extend my fingers for more than a couple seconds otherwise I get a sharp pain up my arm and it's not super holly jolly so I have to work with a curved finger for painting. Since my hands have always kinda been like that it doesn't cause as much of a problem as you'd think so I guess it's not too terrible, though my arm does still get those sharp pains every now and then if I don't take constant little breaks during a painting session but it also leads to me getting distracted half the time so that's a big con right there 0_0" Other than just physical problems on my end I'd say there aren't really any cons haha.

I would've been such a splendid cave artist back in the day danggg. Physical media I usually just use whatever is closest to me so it could be an almost dead marker or an insanely dull pencil and just work with it. Dead markers actually give a fun texture I feel and makes shading better because Crayola kinda sucks which I guess it's understandable because it's make for elementary students and I'm half way through high school trying to use them so I can't complain lol. Cheaper and more convenient than those alcohol markers, they even last longer!

ThatChurro community questions!

@DT_and_FB asked: " @ThatChurro Question- were did you get your inspiration for your art-style, and were do you see yourself improving on?

Hmm.. A lot of things contributed to my style, but out of the examples I gave earlier I'd say the things that had the biggest Impact on my style would be Ouran High School Host Club for how I highlight the eyes, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! for the sharpness of the lashes, different expressions, a whole lot of things from both actually that I myself probably couldn't even point out xD.

And finally Rune Factory for the shading of the skin and how to add the blush and all that fun stuff. There's probably a lot of other things from different pieces of media that I'm not even aware of if I had to be completely honest but I think the biggest thing from this is how the eyes are drawn since I find it to be one of the most important parts of the drawing because it shows emotion and such as well as the expressions. Every time I see a funny or interesting expression, I tend to draw it a lot.

One that I think is really stupid that I use is that one spiderman meme where Miles has his hands behind his head and has his mouth wide open, that's how I came up with that dumb face with the oval eyes and super wide mouth. Now that I'm thinking about it, One Piece expressions have also influenced me greatly back when I used to only draw anime scenes and stuff.

@PineappleChan_ asked: If there was a character that would best describe you and a character that inspires you to be , who would it be and why?

Personally I feel like out of all the characters that I can think of right now, the only one I feel describes me best would be Chiikawa.

I say this for a variety of reasons but I have no clue how to explain it if I had to be honest, you’d have to watch some of it to understand what I mean but I feel like the shy, crybaby, cute loving little guy fits me pretty well, they look up to other around them and are constantly trying to cheer others up when they’re down and I kind of see myself in that aspect.

A character I aspire to be one day would be, as weird as it sounds, Ash Ketchum. I have always really admired the part of him that’s not willing to back down no matter what, and if he loses he doesn’t get super upset and instead tries to find what he can improve on and goes and gives it another shot no matter how hard the challenge may be.

I also have always been impressed with his strategy making, if that's even a word, and how he’s able to adapt to certain changes so easily both while battling and just in general.

Despite what some people may find a whiny and annoying nature I never actually saw that in him and thinking about it I can see how some of those things I mentioned could be considered annoying but I don’t see it in that light. Another thing I admired (as stupid as it sounds) is how easily he was able to make new friends almost instantly after just meeting them and having such a great way at communicating with both his Pokemon and others and being able to understand how they are feeling was really cool to me and still is years and years later.

@SHICHI-39 asked: “What's your favorite thing about creating art? :D”

I’d say finally finishing a piece! Right after hours of work, the feeling of finally seeing the finished product of what you worked so hard on is really a great feeling! I also really love being able to draw something I love and slowly see improvement over time.

One I constantly drew 2 years ago was Yugi Muto from Yu-Gi-Oh! And looking at the old pictures I would draw of him versus a picture I could probably draw now is crazy! Drawing a lot of the same thing does help show improvement over time and makes it easier to see how much you’ve grown!!

@Mewsea asked: “What got you into drawing fanart? And do you ever think about drawing any original characters/OCs? :3 Just asking because I do, sometimes.”

I think it was mainly because I wasn’t sure on how to make my own things when I started out drawing so I started out just redrawing scenes I liked and that evolved into me drawing characters I like that I would draw before, but just however I’d like them to be rather than being in a specific setting.

I have made a very small amount of original characters, I just never draw them which I really should start doing. Funny thing is I actually thought this last night and started a painting with some of my characters in it which should maybe be posted sometime this weekend hehe.

I’m wanting to make more, mainly because when art fight rolls around it makes me feel super lame seeing all these accounts with tons of references and most of my characters have 2 max. But yeah that’s another goal for the new year x3

@-_-PERSEPHONE-_- asked: “What inspires your art? >:0”

A whole lot of things that I couldn’t even keep track of at this point xD Mainly animes and games I’ve played throughout the course of my entire life. And they say games and television is bad for you, pshhh..
