Colors Gallery, meet wooshfloosh

@wooshfloosh let's their talent and passion for Sonic, Pokemon, and other franchises loose in the Colors Gallery! Their use of acid art is also something to really admire! Let's get to know them and admire them further!

@flooshwoosh it's time to let the details loose! What should the Colors Live community know about you?

"Hello!! I am very honored to be the featured artist this week! I’m actually a Colors! 3D oldhead, I started drawing with Colors! 3D in gosh, I think 2013? I deleted my first account but my second one is still up @Floosh ! So despite the age of my current account, I am quite the Colors veteran!" ^_^

Your acid art is really awesome to see, especially in your Sonic and Pokemon art! What inspired you to incorporate it into your style? What would you say are you biggest inspirations and fluences? When did you begin your art journey?

"Thank you for the compliment! This past semester I took a film class that had a discussion on glitch art and glitch aesthetics. I came out of that class wanting to try and make some glitch art of my own. I didn’t know any glitch art techniques besides acid art, so I started experimenting and creating art here!"

"Honestly I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember but I started taking it “seriously” when I was about 12. I had a tough time in middle school, drawing during class helped me get through the long school days. Most of my influences today are pretty similar to my influences at 12 haha. Sonic, Pokemon, Kirby, Splatoon… any video game that strikes my fancy really! I’m also a big fan of comics, Homestuck is my favorite along with the current Sonic the Hedgehog comic of course!"

I Want To Exist! by wooshfloosh

I see from your profile you mainly post art on your tumblr(great stuff by the way!). When did you make your way to our humble community and what has been the biggest highlight for you so far?

"As mentioned before.. I’ve actually been here for quite a while! I came back because I wrote an essay on Colors! for my film class (the definition of ‘film’ was really stretched in that class lol) Colors! is a big source of nostalgia for me and I wanted to write about its relation to game consoles as a drawing game/program. I also credit Colors! for teaching me how to draw. Watching artists' processes back with the replay feature is a great way to learn general drawing and digital drawing techniques! Seeing replays again I ended up changing the essay to being mostly about replays how they work from a technical standpoint (Colors! works pretty differently from most drawing programs!)."

"I think the biggest highlight coming back is just seeing how the Colors! gallery is still vibrant and active! I really love Colors! and I’m glad kids and teens are still picking it up and learning how to draw on it the same way I did!"

Your gallery is small but already shaping up to be quite fantastic! What would you say are the artworks you've posted here in the Colors Gallery that you're the most proud of? Which ones were the most challenging?

My favorite is CHAOS Y2K. I wanted to go with a Y2K/frutiger aero aesthetic and I think I succeeded!

CHAOS Y2K by wooshfloosh

I had a lot of trouble getting the colors how I wanted in Chaos Control (as you can probably tell by the replay.) I’m also still having some trouble getting the hang of painting with pressure sensitivity.

Top 3 favorite Colors artworks?

Such a unique aesthetic, I’ve never seen anything like it on Colors before!!

Fallen Angel by silvy

Loved this one so much I gave it a SUPER LIKE!! It’s so cool people are still drawing on their 3DS!!

gooes hahaaa by animation-examples

It’s really cool to see people play with the replay feature to create frame-by-frame animation! People used to make simple animations with Colors! 3D back in the day but I think animation-examples is really pushing what’s possible with frame-by-frame animation on Colors Live!

Favorite artist on and off Colors Live?

"My favorite artist on Colors Live right now is @Silvy! What can I say, I like the Sonics, and Silvy is quite good at drawing them!"

Icarus don't get too close by silvy

"My favorite artist off of Colors right now is Nathalie Fourdraine. She does covers for the Sonic comics and occasionally colors the interiors. Her coloring skills are insane!! They need her doing more interiors!!"

You have a tumblr so I assume that Colors Live is just one of the few or many softwares/mediums that you use? What else do you use? Are there any features from other software you'd want to see in Colors Live?

"I usually use Photoshop with a Huion Kanvas drawing tablet to create art (a pretty big jump in drawing programs huh?) I also use good old fashioned pen and paper to thumbnail and sketch, something about a sketchbook just gets the creative juices flowing better than digital tools. Lately I’ve also gotten into making cute little rubber stamps."

"Honestly I think Colors Live is fine with the features it has. I really like the simplicity of Colors! and I like seeing all the ways people are able to use the same simple tool set to create unique artworks and techniques. When watching time lapses from other art programs it’s easy to get lost as the artist uses unfamiliar tools and techniques. On Colors Live we all have the same understanding of Colors! toolset. I can see someone's art on Colors, think “how do they do that?” watch the replay and then have a perfect understanding of how they did that! (though maybe not the necessary skills!) Colors! replay feature and simple toolset has fostered a community of teaching and sharing and I think that’s really cool!!"

"That said… jumping between Colors Live and Colors! 3D the tools I missed the most are select and move and transparency lock!"

What exactly is acid art? I've been seeing more and more artist in our community experiment with it. What are the key techniques one must learn to really master it or at least get a grasp of it?

Acid art is a type of glitch art you can create in Colors Live and Colors! 3D (where I learned how to use it) It adds artifacting and a posterize effect to your layer of choice. Heres an old OLD tutorial by Neeradoll on how to create your own acid art:

How to make Acid Art! by NeeraDoll

"I will add it’s now a bit easier to create acid art in the layers panel on Colors Live, just alternate duplicates and merge down on your preferred layer until the artwork stops changing! It’s important to note that all the areas where you fully erase will create ‘holes’ in the final artwork, try to use that to your advantage. It might take me a couple tries to get the acid art looking how I want so I usually copy my ‘base’ pre-erased layer as a backup."

Do you have any near and long term goals that you have for the future?

"Right now I want to get my drivers license and graduate college lol. Long term I would like to make a living using my drawing skills one way or another! Maybe comics? Maybe video games? Who knows!"

What's some interesting advice that you've come to live by?

"Making art always has to have some element of fun! If I’m not having fun making art then it’s a message that something about my process has to change."

If you had to start over your art journey from the beginning what would you prioritize? What would you teach yourself if you had to start from scratch?

"TBH I don’t think I would change anything. The choices I made in the past brought me to where I am today. If I went back and changed anything I would be a different person and a different artist today, but I am happy where I am today. I am still young now, I still have time to get better at drawing and make new choices! Anyways, recently I’ve been trying to get better at drawing hands."

Do you ever get burn out? How do you handle it?

"I tend to go in and out of having motivation to draw, yeah. The cycle has happened enough times now that I know the will to draw will always come back eventually! I try not to beat myself up about it."

BLAZY-MIX by wooshfloosh

What's something about you that's both a strength and a weakness?

"I have an obsessive streak! It's fun to obsess over research and my favorite things, not very fun to obsess over my anxieties and phobias!"

You get to make decisions for your favorite franchises for a year, what would you change?

"Put me in charge of Sonic so I can hire myself to make funny Sonic comics every week and give myself a salary of 1 million dollars a year. Oh, and put Nathalie Fourdraine on coloring more interiors."

Discord question from @razrdraws:Question for Artist of the Week #87 @floosh :
Do you have any specific technique you use for creating acid art and manipulating it?

"TBH I think the way I create acid art is pretty basic, it’s just the way I learned how to do it back in the 3DS days! (You can probably still find the same tutorials I learned it from way-back-when on Colors Live today!) Usually I try to keep the colors I use in a similar range of hue, adding just enough variation to keep it interesting. I use the eraser on about a middle opacity to prevent erasing parts completely and getting large holes in the acid art. Sometimes it might take multiple passes of erasing or I might have to restart to get the effect how I wanted. Acid art is a bit unpredictable and experimental, that’s what makes it fun!"

"I’ve mostly seen people use acid art for backgrounds so I had to figure out on my own how to use acid art as a coloring technique. For the Shadow and Kitsunami piece the acid art takes up the whole canvas on one layer. I covered the next layer up completely in black and then used the eraser to reveal the acid art underneath! It’s kinda like the old rainbow scratch art activity books I used as a kid."

"For Blaze and Chaos Zero I finished the line art first and then created acid art on a lower layer. On Chaos Zero I erased the acid art into shape but for Blaze I realized I could color inside the lines in advance and use the transparency lock to keep any extra strokes of colors inside the lines. Each color section needs its own separate layer. Eventually I did have to merge all the color layers together for Blaze to save layer space, but for Chaos Zero the color layers are still separated. Try taking a look at them in the replay or download them for yourself!"

Anyone you want to shout-out?

"I would like to give a shout out to my film professor, Professor Jonston for structuring a class that lets me write an essay about Colors! Thank you! Now lets hope I get a good grade on that essay…"

"Thanks also to the Colors! dev team for making such a neat little game that fostered my love for drawing and digital art! Thank you as well to the Colors! community for always being so warm and welcoming!! Have a lovely day everyone!!"

That wraps up our interview with @wooshfloosh ! The Colors Team would like to thank you for your time! If you like Sonic, Pokemon, and creative uses of acid art we more than recommend giving them a follow!
