Colors Gallery, meet gauzyguts

@gauzyguts is self taught artist who loves to express their love of indie games, horror, and music through their distinguished art! Now it's time for them to express themselves in this interview!

Who are you? What can you tell us about yourself?

"My name is Joey, I'm a 23 year old trans man from Ohio. I'm a self taught artist. I've been on colors since about 2014 I think? I'm a big fan of pixel indie horror games, I'm the oldest of six siblings, and I have two cats who are basically my children."

What inspired you to begin your art journey? What're your biggest influences?

"My mother is the reason I started taking art seriously at around nine years old. My mom's a tattoo artist and a very talented one at that. She's also the strongest person I know, as well as my best friend. My biggest influences in art are probably my mom, my sister Hannah (who is actually on colors but only posted once when she was fifteen), and all my artist friends!"

How did you discover Colors Live? How do you feel about the community?

"I distinctly remember watching speedpaints on youtube when I was thirteen and seeing a speedpaint that was done on Colors 3D. I thought that drawing on a 3ds sounded super cool so I bought the app. I love what the community has become, especially seeing how many kids are getting into art because of colors. It warms my heart to see a new generation of artists."

Your art style is interesting! What's your usual process? How do you come up with ideas?

"I tend to just draw whatever comes to mind, my process is all over the place to be honest. I jump from project to project, medium to medium, just trying to get what's in my head onto the canvas. My art is a way of sharing the wonder I see in the world. The uncertain, the unusual, the unique. I love things that most people tend to overlook."

Something tells me you're big into music! Am I wrong?

"Music is a HUGE part of my life. I listen to everything from death metal to jpop, punk to lofi. I'm almost always humming a song or listening to something. My favorite artists are Metric, Kikuo, Fall Out Boy, and InabaKumori."

What made you come to our humble community? How did you discover it? Any features you want to see in the future?

"I came because of the speedpaint I mentioned earlier, stayed because of the warmth and acceptance the community provides. If there's one feature I'd love to see, it'd probably be an ability to share other people's work! Maybe a separate page on your profile of other people's works you have shared or favorited! Although that sounds tricky to code.."

Colors art you're most proud of?

"There's a piece I posted in November of 2021 called "catch my breath" that was a very pivotal moment for my art. It made me realize the extent of my artistic capabilities. That is my favorite piece I have done."

Favorite Colors and non Colors artist?

"My favorite colors artist is @-starlight- !!! (hi eden I'm giving you a shoutout !) His art is so clean and colorful. I adore their style so very much.

"My favorite non-colors artist is Ghoulkiss! Their work is just so colorful and creepy-cute. Content warning for pastel gore and bodyhorror on most of their art though! Anyone who doesn't like that should steer clear!"

3 of your favorite Colors artworks?

My three favorite pieces of my own, besides the aforementioned "catch my breath" piece, are these ones:

"incandescent"

"she"

"weird girls"

Goals and aspirations?

"I want to go into the tattoo industry like my mom someday! My mother is very much my biggest inspiration. I look up to her so very much. I also want to save enough money to marry my partner, and eventually I want to adopt a few kids."

What makes someone an artist in your opinion? What separates a hobbyist from the occasional doodler'?

"Anyone who makes art is an artist. Whether it be visual arts, musical arts, culinary arts, etc. I have nothing but love for any and all fellow artists! <3"

Advice for artists of all skill levels?

"Flip. The. Canvas. Trust me. Once you flip the canvas, you can see any errors you may have made and you can fix them. I flip the canvas while sketching, lining, and coloring. Trust me on this."

Best way to overcome art block?

"Doodle! Just let your mind do whatever. I love doing little warmups where I just fill a whole canvas with weird little doodles. Really helps me get my creative juices flowing."

Discord question from razrdraws: What do you think makes your style so defined, specifically using your line work?

"Hmmmm... That's a good one. I tend to work with as thin a line as possible, but in some cases I like to play with the lineart a bit. Line weight is a big one for me. Since I use a 3ds, I actually have to go in and manually add line thickness and weight. I think that it forces me to take more time and care with my linework."

Anyone you want to shout-out?

"My cat, Samus, who was crawling all over me the whole time I was typing out my answers. There they are!"

That wraps up our interview with @gauzyguts ! We at The Colors Team would like to thank you for your time! I have a gut feeling that it would be a good idea to keep an idea on them!
