Colors Gallery, meet funnyFizz

@funnyFizz has a way of visualizing the abstract in a way that is rarely seen. Seeing their dream-like art is almost like peering into a rift or window that leads to another world! However, this dream is now coming true- let’s begin the interview!

@funnyFizz it's time to learn the bizz on fizz! What should we know about you?

“I’m Fizz, currently going through a rebrand, Boof is the new name, but Fizz is still fine. I go by any pronouns. I’m an artist!”

Your art... The color palette choice and abstract nature is very dream-like. What were the biggest inspirations that brought you on your current path as an artist? What made you pick up the pen(or stylus) in the first place?

“Many have pointed out my “dream-like” appearance to my pieces, it's the main draw to my works from what I’ve seen over the years.”

“At first, I took a lot of inspiration from myself, being diagnosed with schizophrenia since age 11 turns out to have some perks when you’re an artist. I was always drawing due to this to help cope with my symptoms.”

“ Then, I started taking things seriously when I was a bit older to help my myself make money for the things I wanted for my art skills to blossom, whether it be materials, equipment, or classes. “

The Bloom and The Glow by funnyFizz

I always have huge respect for artists that started with and are still using Colors!3D, especially in this day and age of super advanced painting software and photo-shop lites! How did you discover the Colors community? What pushed you to upload and put yourself out there for the world to see?

“I also have respect for artists who use and experiment on lesser known and not as advanced pieces of software in this day of age.”

“To me, I think limitations are the best way to really see how you can perform, the Colors!3D program on my 3DS systems is no exception. I discovered Colors!3D when I was way younger, it was around 2012-13 when it first hit the E-Shop.”

“I had many school friends at the time who also had 3DS systems and Colors!3D, so sharing my work online was a way to keep in touch with them when we all started going our separate ways. Then eventually we all moved to more conventional social media.”

Bold and Brash by funnyFizz

Do you use anything other than Colors? What are your favorite softwares/mediums of choice and how does Colors fit into your process?

“I’ve used a lot of different things over the years to see what works with me, I primarily use Clip Studio Paint and traditional mediums like acrylic paints. Colors is like a digital sketchbook to me. I’ve had a great time using it over the years and across some systems. “

Being primarily a Colors!3D user, what would you say is something you enjoy most about it? And are there any dream features you have in mind for Colors Live or any other potential versions of Colors! in the future?

“There was nothing quite like the button layout for me on any other tablet or program until much, much later when the Tourbox came out in recent years. I don’t really have much in mind for additions for newer versions.”

Your art is so captivating! But if you had to choose a favorite of yours, which would it be? Which artworks of yours would say were the most rewarding to work on or were the most challenging?

“That would be like picking a favorite child to me. I love all my pieces equally, even the ones I stress over. I don’t base my likes of my works on my personal aesthetics, I base them off of how entertaining it is to actually make each one of them. Furthermore, I get sad when I finish a piece, cause that means I’m out of moves for that particular idea.”

Who are your biggest inspirations both off and on Colors Live? How do they inspire you and what are your biggest takeaways when you admire their artworks?

“I’ll start with Colors Live. There’s so many artists that have influenced my work ethic over the years, @Day, @satorikirby, @maruO3, @mari_colette, @Smallpoly, @mccollins, just to name a few of my favorites. They’re all very nostalgic to me considering I grew up watching a few of them.”

“I think the funniest part about having a favorite internet artist when you’re a kid is thinking that you’re never going to get up to the same skill as the people you look up to, but when you grow up you realize that you absolutely can.”

“Outside of Colors Live, I tend to keep a small group of RSS feeds dedicated to my favorite artists, Peter draws and vewn are my current online revisit obsessions.”

In your opinion, what's the key to making compelling abstract art? Does it need to tell a story? Or does it just need to convey emotions? What's your take on it?

“I explored this in a series of illustrations about my childhood and my schizophrenia called “Indigo Project.” They can be found scattered across my new Instagram handle, boof.bono, they may be outdated scans, but they are some of my strongest pieces I have made that experiment with abstraction. To me, abstraction is more than just an art form, it’s how some people view reality. “

“On a side note, I’m a massive fan of outsider art, I am no stranger to abstraction in art and understanding what each and every artist conveys their reality.”

For artists beginners, what should they study/what practices should they incorporate to progress quickly? What should they avoid to keep from developing bad habits or what may keep them from pushing their skills further?

“At this point in this world, work ethic and adaptability is all you need. Always be open to the idea of improvement, explore with art, engage with it. Do whatever you want.”

Angel Indi by funnyFizz

Do you have any plans for the near or far future? What are your goals for 2025 and beyond?

“I only see 5 years into the future to keep myself sane. I hope to open commissions and sell some of the backlog of physical work I’ve accumulated over the years.”

What do you do when you fizzle out or run out of ideas? What do you do to keep the ideas coming and reinvigorate your passion?

“Good question, never had a problem with having ideas, but sometimes my hamster wheel inside my head works overtime, gets tiring to where it gets in the way of my work flow."

“Whenever I get that way, I have usually already drawn a lot of things that day, the best thing is to take a break."

“Take care of yourself, however it may be, like getting a snack, taking a nap, or playing a game, sometimes its good to let your head rest after a good session. I personally found that meditation is great for me.”

Lungo and Uno, Chilling by funnyFizz

The art world is constantly changing, what do you think are the most important skills for any anyone taking art seriously to keep adapting to change?

“Knowing what you want, focusing on your strengths, working on your weaknesses, and most importantly, marketing yourself.”

“ There are plenty of hustle videos that explain these concepts, but really there’s not much of a hustle when you approach it with a great marketing strategy.”

Wishing Star by funnyFizz

Nature, nurture, or a bit in-between? If you could break down your artistic journey into phases or percentages, what would your ratio look like?

“You ever hear the story of the Lone Cypress? Well, it’s a big tree that’s on a sandy cliff sides of Pebble Beach, California. It was said to have been planted in or around the mid 18th century."

“When I went to see it on a family trip, I felt a sense of relatability, the crashing waves, the raging wind would have otherwise left it adrift at sea a long, long time ago. But it kept growing.”

“Despite everything that’s inhospitable in not only around me but also in me, I still grow. I like to think that maybe one day I’ll be a lot like that tree.”

Anyone else you think deserves some recognition? Who do you want to shout-out?

“Shoutouts to anyone who is also still on 3DS/2DS systems. I love you all.”
