Colors Gallery, meet SoupiBuddi

@SoupiBuddi is an artist of no style or grace... You could say that their style is all over the place! Do you want to learn their lore? Read this interview and find out more!

Who are you? Introduce yourself!

"My name is Faye, but online I go by the name Tin or Soup interchangeably, I'm from England and my interests are drawing, writing, music and anything that's creative or gets me to think."

You bouncing between a more loose cartoony style to realism is interesting? What would you say inspires you? What do you hope to achieve with your art?

"Anything and everything could inspire me, I am inspired by the emotion, structure or general atmosphere of certain things so there is no particular end goal for my art style because if I stick to one art style or way of drawing I limit the atmosphere or the emotion I could portray. And I hope to achieve the ability to truly get down the atmosphere, or raw feeling down on the canvas (or other form of art)."

You have some interesting characters! Especially the character under #FOcRuler ! Your gallery description mentioned you like to focus on lore and worldbuilding! I ask this as someone who enjoys writing too, what is the the lore and story? How did you come up with them? Anything you would like to share?

"Ruler has quite an interesting backstory, but it's a little unrefined still.
(I didn't mean for it to go on this long lol)."

"Ruler was born in a plant world where all the people are either fruit or flowers. They're all born with basic knowledge of language and intelligence (as their brains fully develop in the growing phase before they fall off of their mother plant and gain sentience, or bloom for flowers)."

"The plant people's existence consists of wandering for a few days or weeks, depending on the plant's lifespan, before withering away and dying with the only purpose of spreading their plant's seeds. Ruler managed to figure out how to survive and prolong herself from rotting through various methods. She ends up wandering through a desert and finding a very technologically advanced research station manned by humans. Somehow that leads to her having her plant cells replaced with regenerative and more durable cells, thus her lifespan increased. As an experiment the people at the facility tried to teach her things like maths, science, reading, writing, etc and she picked up on it incredibly quickly. In her time spent at the research facility she quickly learnt the science of DNA/DNA modification and became part of the research team (As it was researching the genetics of her and other interdimentional species)."

"After about a decade had passed since then, she was growing old and sick and had tried many ways to increase her lifespan (Grafting another genetically modified plant onto herself was one way she tried, that's why she has another face on her torso) but to no avail. She kept researching many different things and ended up finding only one solution. It was to basically corrupt and turn inside out the entire universe she lived in so that time wouldn't effect her and reality didn't work the same anymore. She soon tried it out of desperation and it did work. Logic would bend to her whim and she used the lack of logic to create her own solution to live longer."

"The corrupted universe was pretty much a safe hub world for her to live in before she could find ways to make her body sustain itself in other universes with more logic. Eventually she did, but to her it wasn't enough as she wanted to live forever and couldn't accept death.
She found a way to sort of absorb the entire corrupted universe so that time would never effect her, no matter where she went. She did end up destroying all planets and lifeforms of that universe in the process, including her home planet."

"Hundreds of years after that she managed to build up an entire empire in a funky world called Nerth where she is one of the queens. She pretends to be some lesser queen of a small kingdom, but she created most of the creatures, plants and ecosystem of Nerth."

"Too add, Paperdust is not from Nerth's universe though, he seemingly appeared out of nowhere, and seems to accidentally create unseen glitches in Nerth's universe that only Ruler can really see or notice."

"So on the surface Paperdust and Ruler are friends, but underneath that Ruler is observing him, trying to figure out what he is and where he comes from
(I have a lot of alternate universe and timeline lore haha)."

Your first upload to colors was in 2017. How did you discover colors? How do you feel about the community after 6 years? Have your feelings changed?

"I found Colors because my mom bought Colors 3D for her 2DS and I found it cool so I bought it. I got it in 2016 but didn't create an account until 2017. As for how I feel about the community, it's definitely gotten better since the Switch release. There seems to be more staff and more site management as of late. 2017 Colors was great and I made so many memories. But for some reason at around 2019 Colors was full of toxic users and a lot of my favourite users ended up leaving and abandoning their accounts."

"My feelings have changed a lot, today I use Colors as a place to post my art, back then I used it as a sort of social app."

What advice would you give someone who struggles to grasp art fundamentals?

"From my experience, observation is key. Drawing isn't just about motor skills and painting techniques, while that is important it's also just as much about intuition, observation and memory retention. Try and do exercises to train observation and memory. My favourite memory and observation exercise is drawing a picture from reference, then the same image only from memory, and when I'm done comparing the two and noting any tiny thing I miss, get wrong, or is out of proportion. Then I carefully compare the two to the original reference and note everything wrong. I find it helpful because I can see where I go wrong when I draw from memory, and if I do the same mistake on both images I can tell what I need to improve on. It sort of subconsciously locks in the things I usually miss when drawing from memory and helps with observation skills too."

Any features you would like to see in the future?

"The only thing I can think of is maybe the ability to like comments or some sort of "thank you!" Button, because sometimes I appreciate people's comments but don't have the energy to reply and say thanks, a lot of other users have said similar things to that so it'd be a pretty useful feature!"

Colors art you're most proud of?

Hmm...my top 5 paintings I'm most proud of are (as titled):

"Long Distance Friendship"

"Small Signs, Subtle Wonders"

"Palm Trees"

"Realistic Foroch"

"Happy Faze"

Favorite artist on and off colors? What makes them your favorites?

"My favourite artist ever is Ivan Seal, because to me his paintings have an almost nauseating and dread inducing feel despite being calm with only a singular ambiguous object as the focus. The fact that he has the ability to induce so many emotions with just colors and composition is amazing."

Top 3 Favorite colors artist?

That's a tricky one, but if I had to choose, these are the users whose art I like the most;
@Esai2005
@Linkanoodlesoup
@gauzyguts

Any goals and ambitions for the future?

"To be honest, I have no idea what I'm going to do for the future. The only ambition I have right now is starting an animated series about Paperdust."

What is key to coming up with good characters, lore, and world building in your opinion? What mistakes should beginners avoid making?

Things I think help with stories, characters, world building and lore:

"Always make notes, have a pocket notebook with you or a notes app so you can write down random passing ideas you get."

"Scribble, doodle, allow yourself to be bored, you might end up coming up with the best character or story that way."

"Collect a bunch of your random ideas and recycle them."

"Learn about shape language and about what colors go together."

"Learn about fashion, and also learn about different cultures and lifestyles."

"Learn about things that your characters would like but you might not, really try to get into their head."

Make tiny details and habits for the character that aren't ever said or shown but are present within the character

"Make lots of character designs, even if they never become real characters, eventually you'll find a handful you'll love."

"You can take inspiration from atmospheres/vibes of characters/people/places/items rather than the visual components."

"Design and create characters and stories that you like and you want to create even if it goes against conventional designs or conventional story telling."

"Consider exploring stories that are morally ambiguous, there is more chaos and there is no real black and white morality in real life."

"In stories, consider what a side character was doing that day to have an idea of what's in their mind."

Any advice when it comes to art?

"General art (or just life) advice is that it's okay to mess up, and that you shouldn't compare your art skill to others, but to yourself. And that you shouldn't hate on your old art, even if it's bad. Past you got you where you are now, and that's not deserving of ridicule."

Anyone you want to shout-out?

"Yes, shout-out to @AnArtistNamedStar, my sister, because she's inspired me a whole lot, or accidentally lead me to come up with great ideas just by talking to her. Half of my creativity I have today I wouldn't have without her. She has lightened up my life a whole lot just by existing."
