Colors Gallery, meet Hailsss

@Hailsss is an artist well known for their versatility, love of The Legend of Zelda franchise, love of anime, pursuit of realsim,as well as their optimism. Colors Gallery, say hi to Hailsss and get to know them a little better!

Who is Hailsss? When did you get into art? What's your origin story?

"I'm just your average rando on the internet that just so happens to love art. I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. But like everyone else, my art started as nothing more than crayon scribbles."

How did you find out about Colors Live? How do you feel about the community ?

"I believe I found out about Colors while browsing the game store on the switch, it seemed right up my alley so I went ahead and bought it! The thought of posting my art online was kinda daunting at first, I wasn't used to having many eyes on my art. But I absolutely love the community, it feels so tight-knit and cozy!"

What's your opinion on art style? You seem to experiment with a lot of them. What's your typical painting process? Is it different depending on what you're trying to achieve?

"When it comes to art style, I mostly switch between different ones just because I get bored of them, or because I'm inspired by something else that day. I really can't imagine ever settling on just one."

"My painting process depends on the style I'm going for of course. For a more painterly/ loose style, I always start with a sketch, then add base colors underneath, make a new layer on top and continue rendering from that point on."

"Otherwise, if the art is all linework, I'll sometimes sketch first before the actual linework. Other times I'll treat it like a doodle and clean it up as I go."

Tribute to Dr.Seuss by Hailsss

You kinda exploded in popularity when you first joined Colors Live. How did you feel during that time? Was it overwhelming?

"It was definitely a strange feeling, colors was the first platform I had ever been able to share art on."

"I felt a bit of pressure to make sure all my art was as good as I was capable of at the time. I remember my hands would literally shake when I was posting something. But I felt right at home after a few weeks, the community is so chill and supportive!"

Who or what inspires you? You seem to be a bit of an anime and cartoon nerd.

"I have a maaasive list of artists, books, cartoons, shows etc, that have inspired me. But the two that had the biggest impact on me as a kid, and were my main inspiration for drawing, was a graphic-novel called “Cardboard” by Doug TenNapel, and The Legend Of Zelda manga by Akira Himekawa."

What advice would you give to beginners or artists in general?

"USE REFERENCE PHOTOS!!!!!!!!
For the longest time I had it in my mind that using a reference photo was cheating, and that it was a bad practice.. (How wrong I was..)."

"There’s absolutely no shame in learning from copying, that's how I picked up many of the techniques I use everyday. Of course if you're doing a straight-up copy of another artist's work make sure to give credit where it's due!"

Have any art goals?

"I've always wanted to create and publish my own graphic novel, so that's definitely high up on the list.."

"This feels like blue sky dreaming, but I would love to grow my skills enough to support me financially someday. I don't have any specific jobs in mind but I've been looking into it more recently!"

Your favorite tools in Colors Live and why do you use them? Anything you would like to see in the future?

"My go-to brush is always the “Classic brush pen” and I rarely plug my sonar pen in, because I'm just not used to the pressure sensitivity haha."

"Other tools I use on a regular basis are the Select fill tool, select and move tool, and the dodge and multiply thingies."

How does Colors Live compliment your workflow? Do you have any other preferred mediums or software?

"The main thing I love about Colors is how simple it is. Coming from traditional art mediums to this was sooo much easier than some of the other software I had tried."

"I'm currently TRYING to get used to ProCreate, but for some odd reason I still prefer a tiny DS pick over an $80 apple pen."

"When it comes to traditional art, I mostly just doodle with clicky pencils and ball point pens. Although I also have a hobby of building small house models out of trash.. I think that counts?? Haha."

"These artists have been my main source of inspiration on colors. Some of them do realism which is something I struggle to find the willpower to practice haha.. But when I look through their galleries that's all the inspiration I need."

Discord Question from @razrdraws: Hey Hailey! What are your best tips for going with your realism approach (for example: broad loose strokes, but defined details)?

"Hmmm that’s a tough one lol! I’m always trying out different methods in the small amount of realism paintings I’ve done on colors."

"I'm honestly still figuring it out myself.
That being said, I'm not sure I'm qualified to give any specific advice on the topic. But I guess if I had to say something, it would be to do just that- try out loads of different methods and see what sticks!"

Discord Question from @Dusty Lizard: Question, you have such a great depiction of colors in your drawings, the layering of different values and in such a short amount of time too! Do you have tips for fast color techniques?

"First off, thank you very much!!""

"One of the FEW things I remember from color theory is how to find complementary colors ( colors opposite to each other on the color wheel), that’s definitely something I use in basically every one of my paintings."

"I also find it really helps to add a background color before I start painting over a sketch, trying to build up colors from a completely white canvas is a bit of a pain!"

"Another technique I’ve started using, is to paint a low opacity wash over the entire painting. A lot of the time the colors I pick right off the bat can be a bit jarring, or don’t go together as well as I’d like them to.. this seems to help them all come together a bit before I continue to render."

"As for the speed of the coloring, I feel like that really comes down to practice.. I wish I had a more exciting answer, but that’s what I did haha! :,)
Thanks for the question!"

Discord Question from @VampireFish: Do you have any tips for how to practice and improve in art?

"Sure! This is pretty standard advice, but practicing realism has definitely helped me understand things like, how light interacts with different objects, etc. If you have a decent grasp on how things look in the real world, that can definitely translate into even more impressive stylized artwork."

"Another thing that helps me soooo so much, is to not be afraid to make absolute GARBAGE looking art haha. Very often I find myself starting a painting with the mindset that it needs to be perfect, or better than my last piece.. That mindset only holds me back."

"Tell yourself that you don’t need to show anyone, and you’re just going to have fun with it!
99% of the time my art turns out so much better when I do this!
And if not, who’s even gonna know?"

Discord Question from @Lilyofthe328Valley: How do you have the ability to draw in so many styles?

"Growing up my interests were constantly changing, (and still are hehe). I would always draw whatever I was into at the time, which meant I was exploring lots of different genres and artwork."

"After a few years of drawing like this, I feel fairly confident with a small handful of styles!"

Anyone you want to shout out? Not necessarily a friend or a favorite.

"I want to give a shout out to @bowies , she was my first follower (through another account though) she's super sweet and her art is adorable!"
