Colors Gallery, meet Emism

@Emism, Murdoc stan, character designer, and a talented cartoonist, they bring their charming doodles to the Colors Gallery that mesmerize our eyes! Fans of Gorillaz and of cartoonny art styles gather around! It's time for the interview!

@Emism it's time to tell your fans about you! What should they know?

"Greetings! I'm a cartoon-brained creating machine from Ireland with a love for stars, the colour blue, and Murdoc Niccals."

I'm an appreciator of cartoony styles! Yours is especially vibrant and charming! What would you say are your biggest inspirations? What aspects and influences from others or franchises are your favorites and how do they show themselves in your work?

"Steven Universe was the show that sparked my love of character design and story telling, which lead me to become much more dedicated to art as a hobby and potential career.
I also take a lot of inspiration from Scott Pilgrim when it comes to humour and mixing aspects of cartoons and anime together."

Your first post was back in January this year so you're still a newcomer to the Colors Gallery! What has your experience been like in our humble community so far? How did you discover Colors Live?

"For a good few years I was only able to draw traditionally since my laptop that I used to make digital art had stopped working. I missed digital art terribly and remembered being told about Colors Live by a fellow artist. I got it for Christmas last year and I've been loving it. It sort of reminds me of being on Miiverse, a site that'll always be in my heart."

Do you use any other software or mediums? How does Colors Live fit your process? Are there any future features from other apps you want to see?

"Outside of Colors, I use traditional mediums. I've got a pile of sketchbooks and bags of pencils on my bed at all times for when inspiration hits. I also dabble in painting and making little knick knacks from clay."

"I find Colors Live to be a simple and satisfying scratch to my digital art itch. Colors is also great whenever I want to make a quick coloured doodle as opposed to spending ages colouring with pencils."

What Colors Live artworks of yours are you most proud of? Which one was the most difficult?

"I'm pretty proud of the two mermaid collages I did for MerMay, I surprised myself with how well the backgrounds came out on those."

"The most difficult one was probably Two Scythes of the Same Coin, figuring out how to frame the scythes around the characters with limited space and all."

What are your top 3 favorite Colors artworks?

If it's a painting of a dog, it's the number 1 best thing ever posted. I'm a simple person.

Favorite artist on and off Colors Live?

@Linkanoodlesoup on Colors, big fan of the Gorillaz stuff.
Wazzaldorp AKA Brandon Turner elsewhere, he draws so many cute girls.

What are some things people get wrong about art styles and how can they avoid them? What is key to developing a style that stands out?

"Relying too heavily on other styles can be a detriment. I think artists need to develop a sort of 6th sense for what feels right to them. Don't ignore your personal urges when it comes to how you draw things, learn what your hand wants to draw and don't restrict yourself with too many rules.

Would you rather be an artist that excels at a bit of everything but is a master of nothing or would you rather be an artist that isn't the most well rounds but excels at what they're good at/has something that distinguishes them from others that's hard to replicate?

"I think I'm already the latter. I definitely have a knack for drawing and designing characters but other things such as backgrounds and scenery can be lacking."

What advice would you give others that you wish you knew sooner(it doesn't have to be art related)?

"Moderate how much you idolize other art. If you spend too much time thinking of how much better someone else is, you'll just be slowing your own growth."

What are you goals and plans for the future? Where do you see yourself in the next few years if you could perfectly predict your future?

"I hope to have turned my many story ideas into comics or even animated series. Other than that, I just really want to get my characters out there and let people get to know them."

How do you avoid burning out? If you can't, what is your solution for dealing with it?

"Music! I need to take a break to listen to music and let my mind wander for a while every so often. It helps clear my head when it's clogged with ideas and I often find myself getting irritable if I go too long without it."

If you're good for me by Emism

Style or substance?

"Both are important, but if I had to choose one it would be style. Substance is a more difficult thing to get right, but style is subjective and everyone has their own."

I see we have another gorilliaz fan! For those who don't know about them, what should they know? What is you favorite thing about them and what should they know?

"Aside from my obsession with Murdoc Niccals, I love Gorillaz for being a fantastic collaboration between music and visuals. I don't usually care much about bands beyond their songs, but Gorillaz with their interesting characters and lore has got me hooked. Damon and Jamie are both geniuses in their own ways."

Happy Valentines Day by Emism

How did you come up with your persona?

"I started off just drawing myself pretty true-to-life, but over time I started taking liberties like designing cool outfits to make a more idealized version of myself. It's sort of me but also sort of its own thing."
