One of the many spectacular gems in the Colors Live Gallery, @BlueLapis travels from another dimension to deliver upon us awesome art! A self-taught artist, with a passion for reading, dancing, and anime, BlueLapis shines as brightly as the gemstone they call themselves! Lapis Lazulis gemstones are known as a symbol of wisdom so I'd say it's time aquire the wisdom of BlueLapis! Let's get to know them now!
It's time to lap up some information about @BlueLapis! What's your story? What do we need to know?
Hi everyone!!! I'm Lapis and I'm a full self-taught artist from Italy (mamma mia!!). Drawing is my favourite hobby but I also enjoy reading, dancing, and watching anime (I love Ranma ½, Yu yu Hakusho and Gintama)!! In my family I'm the only one who loves to draw; I've been drawing since I was able to hold a pencil :D !!

From realism, to cartoony, anime inspired, painterly, and surrealism, your gallery seems to have a lot of variety! What inspired you to begin your art journey? What would you say are your biggest influences and got you to pick up the pen(or paint brush or stylus) in the first place?
I'm not very sure on what inspired me to begin, I think I just wanted to express myself as a child by drawing my family, animals, and... LOTS OF UNICORNS (I was the classic "unicorn girl" when I was young).
Today, my biggest influences are comics, manga, anime and obviously animated films (especially Studio Ghibli, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Howl's Moving Castle).

So how'd you end up here in the Colors Live community? What lead you to join? What are your favorite things about the community and keeps you around?
I've discovered Colors Live by watching a youtube video of an italian artist, she made a recension about it. I bought it back in 2021, because I decided to start drawing digitally and I wanted something quite cheap to start :). I started posting my paintings because I wanted someone to see my artworks!! I like being in this community because I love to see, like, comment others' drawings and obviously to make new friends :D !!
So if you had to choose which Colors artworks of yours were your favorites, what would they be? Which ones and why?

I think this might be my best drawing ever at the moment :). This turned out exactly how imagined it and the dress is just P E R F E C T .

I still love this because it was the first time I drew BoB human!

This has a very special personal story: It is a reproduction of a really existing poster, designed by the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha. 2 months ago I took a very important school oral exam during which I talked about the Belle Époque. For artistic education I decided to talk about Mucha and I brought a GIANT print of this drawing, and my teachers loved it!! I was really happy that day!!
Top 3 favorites Colors Live artworks that aren't your own?
Favorite artist on and off Colors Live? How do they influence you?
My favourite artists on Colors Live are:
@Hailsss she is one of my inspirations to draw realistic portraits :) Requests #3 by Hailsss
@sharp_eyed_detective I LOVE her ocs and watching the playbacks of her drawings helps me a lot to semplify anatomy. Gnat!! by sharp_eyed_detective
@Mikk6y their paintings are just CRAZY! Judge Angels by Mikk6y
My favourite artists off Colors Live are:
Krijovnik, JADOKAR, SamDoesArts and RichardHTT (who is italian), you can find them all on Youtube. My favourite "historical" artist (as I said before) is Alphonse Mucha.
What's your typical artistic creation process? Are you more technical, intuitive, or a mix of both?
During these months in the community I changed a lot of my creative process (and it will continue to change!). I usually think (or sometimes dream!!!) what I want to draw, I "stop" the image of the silhouette in my mind and then I just draw it!! Inspiration comes in the strangest moments, for example once I had the idea of a drawing, while I was going down the escalators of a shopping center!
Sometimes I also just watch others' artworks or speedpaints to get some ideas :).
With such a solid grasp of painting fundamentals, I'm assuming that you also paint on paper too? What are you prefered tools, softwares and mediums? How does Colors Live fit into your process?
Yes, I paint on paper too!! I obviously started with a sheet of paper and a pencil then I moved onto digital with Colors Live (it is the first software I've ever tried). I love to take portraits of my friends! Now at every birthday party I'm invited to, I take a portrait of the birthday girl/boy as a gift for them.
I usually paint with watercolours (especially landscapes) wich are my favourite medium, but also with acrylic or alcohol markers, coloured fineliners and pencils. At the end of July I bought an iPad (A16) and the app I use to draw is Sketchbook, maybe in the future I will buy Procreate too.

We're working on getting devkits so we can get to developing a switch 2 version of Colors Live or a Colors Live 2! If you could recommend any new features for a future iteration of Colors Live, what would you like to see?
In my opinion, Colors Live is perfect just the way it is, but it would be very useful a fludify tool: If a shape seems a little crooked, you can fix it very easily with this tool. Another cool feature in the gallery would be to choose the color of your username ^^ !!
BlueLapis is such an elegant alias! How'd you come up with it? Are you a fan of gemstones or a collector of sorts?
Thank you!! When I was young I began to be fascinated by science, especially astronomy and geology. My favourite gem is lapislazuli so for short Lapis!! I would love to collect gems, it's a dream of mine ;) .

Seems you have a real talent for realism! What made you want to focus on that more seriously? Is it to be become a more well-rounded artist or is it your main focus now?
My main objective from when I was young is to be able to make fantasy landscapes or invented portraits, I want to draw easily whatever comes in my mind without any reference. My main focus now is to improve all my art skills, not only realism. I should study more anatomy and paint more instead of doing doodles :) .

What makes someone the "ideal artist" in your opinion? How does one stand out from the many in the art world in this day and age?
I don't like the words "ideal artist", because they push beginner artists to be more like their ideal, and not more the way they are. Someone who stands out is someone who is able to make something new, different, or something people will love (which is not always synonymous with what they like to do). Personally I think people should just draw what they want and love, not draw "what the people want and love".

What would you say are you current strengths and weaknesses? What were they in the past? How do you hope to improve in the future as you journey through life?
One of my strengths is definetly how fast I learn, I've noticed that every drawing I make is better than the last one, maybe it could not seem, but in every one there is at least one thing I like more.
My biggest weakness is laziness (for those who care about I'm an INFP-T hehe). I have LOTS of sketches I've never finished, with only lineart or even with half of the flat colors. I should be way LESS lazy and just finish what I start.
It's nice seeing another Italian Colors Live user! Does your culture play a big role in what you like to draw?
Yes it does!! As my art teacher said... in the past, Italy was the center of the world from an artistic point of view. I quite live near Venice which is a city full of art and wonderful museums :) !! I love studying history of art and ancient artists: their biography, the meaning of their paintings,...
Another special dream of mine is to be able in the future to paint like the great painters of the past (for example Michelangelo, Raffaello, ...)
Yet another artist who has made huge leaps and strides since they've joined us! What would you led to your biggest improvements as an artist? Were you inspired by your friends here in the gallery or did you watch a lot of playbacks to learn useful techniques? Any advice for the up an'comers?
I don't know very well what helped me to improve that much. To be honest I've watched lots of playbacks and youtube videos during these months and comparing myself with other artists in the gallery, helped me to define my techniques and my creative process.
Some advices for you all are: don't be like others' art be like yours. Don't try too hard to find the inspiration, the inspiration will find you (obviously always in the worst moments). Basically relax and be the way you are!! I'm sorry I'm a little too poetic ;) .

When feeling blue, what do you do? How do you overcome artistic burnout?
As I said before I just keep going my feelings. If I'm in burnout I just don't draw, because that means I have to take a break :) . Sometimes I can escape that feeling by looking through the gallery of some artists who don't post anymore.

What're your hopes, dreams, and goals for the future? What've you got planned for 2025 and beyond?
Next year I want to concentrate more on anatomy study, color theory and different painting techniques. Basically just study art and its applications :) .
And I definetly need to be less lazy so maybe I will buy me some art books for Christmas.
My biggest dream for the future is to make art my job, my dream jobs are: illustrator, cartoonist and graphic designer!!
