Alien Invasion
The invaders had been watching us for a while.
Maybe from a distant planet many lightyears away. Or maybe they had their equivalent of sleeper agents living amongst us gathering intelligence. However they did it, they managed to gather more than enough information as all of their technology completely nullified whatever defenses we could have hoped to mount against their invasion.
Though even if they didn't, it likely wouldn't matter anyway because even their most basic tech is more advanced than ours by thousands of years.
The real question is what could a species that predates humanity by thousands of years possibly want from us that they likely don't already have in abundance? Material resources? A new planet to call home? Or maybe they just see us as primitive lifeforms whose only use is to be exploited, not much different to how we'd treat an ant or a cow.
Whatever their goal is, if it's anything like their tech, it's likley beyond our comprehension.
