There is an equation for power on smogon. Type is just luck, I suppose.

As I listed in my forums, when I was chaining abras with the pokeradar, my chain broke on a timebomb patch (a patch that contains the pokemon you want, but breaks the chain), which that alone is rare. For some reason the abra was shiny. That had the normal chance for a shiny. I loled for a while until I saw its nature: Impish.

I feel your pain... I ran from a shiny zubat because I didn't know what a shiny was and my shiny machamp was deleted from a corrupted file- I cried that night. :(
