It's not weird at all! Drawing an understructure is one of the best ways to work on any part of the body, especiall the complicated parts like hands and feet.

lol before i hate to draw hands and hardly draw them, until one day in art class few years ago, when my teacher point it out how people alway try to hide the hands when draw people (eg.in poket, behind back behind head....aslong as it not visible!) i got so self-aware that i have to draw at least one hand in all my drawing even if it suck so bad =___=!
so this will really help!

Akita_Marie, that's a terrible way to view the world. Hands can be used to do bad, sure, but they can also be used to do great good. To view the world in only the terms it can hurt you is a sad way to live. Also, proper terminology, or at least a basic understanding of it, is very beneficial. In college one of the first things we did in figure drawing class was learn the names of all the muscles and bones of the human body. Knowing them gives a better understanding of the way the form moves under the surface.
