Great tutorial , but i do not agree that the soft brush is the best one to shade , i rarely use it because it makes the drawing look more fake/ less realistic because everyting is smooth , but offcourse that's only my opinion and every artist's style is different ^^. I really loved the awesome animation , keep up these awesome tutorials/drawings !

Generally when teaching shading you tell a person to create a light source (or multiple ones) & then shade the behinds of all of the objects those light sources touch.. or something like that.
And white & black arn't really good for shading you know. ._. I mean, your animation is awesome, but... when shading an object you would normally use a darker shade of that color, not black unless you're creating a new sort of theme. Same goes for lighting, white is usually only used when someone or something is wet & the light is reflecting off some parts of the water, making it nearly as bright as the light source bouncing off of it.
That's what I've learned over the years. Your tutorial isn't explaining enough "whys".
I don't wanna be rude. -_-;

Shadow and light don't make colours lose...colour. Shadow and light colours are colours reflected from the environment.

Instead of telling you how much I LOVED THIS, I made a picture: #BlahT2RR (had to make stupid tag no one would post anything on)

Several people said I spent more time on the animation vs the teaching. That may be because the drawing parts go by too fast. This is my first drawing tutorial but not my first animation, so naturally my animsting skills are better than my art teaching skills. I might have to do one about basic lighting because I just realized I don't always get light direction right. Remember, I said I'm a beginner. ^#^

Well I watched it for the animation so I'm happy!
The thing about teaching is; get to the bottom and don't invent the wheel, use only teaching material that is proven to work, the techniques you describe prove no good result because the basics don't relate to the desired results.. But the painting gathered a lot of good comments so its helpful nonetheless :).

So maybe the point is , these basic shading teaches you to become a beginner. It skips essential basics , because its your current state of magic technique to makes fast pics that are needed for your animations.

this is really great! the only thing is you shouldnt shade with black, and white. it makes things look sorta weird, you should shade with a darker version of the color youre using, and add light effects with a lighter version of the color youre using. (also experimenting with other colors too! i.e. if you draw something orange then you could shade it with a darkish red, and lighten it with a yellowish color)

btw, i made a new OC, his name's Jonathon, he has black hair, and wears glas.ses, he went to school with Calzer and all of them, he's REALLY smart, confident, and witty, he's a rocket scientist, experiment scientist, human....er....tist(he HIGHLY studies the human mind, he has no job appealed to it, he just uses it to amaze ppl), and a biologist, he study's Calzer, he's trying to figure out why he's almost 35, looks like a teenage girl, behaves like a 5 yr old toddler, and yet has an EXTREMELY high IQ, Jonathon also plays with him, even though he thinks he's REALLY annoying, and just tolerates him, he likes to protect him, and save him from things that might hurt him(mainly mentally and sometimes physically), in school, John always protected Calzer (when he got the chance),but they in many of the same clas.ses so, Calzer still got bullied pretty bad, Jonathon was in tne chess club and is STILL a chess champion
i might draw him on here, but i dont feel like it.... :/

Awesome job RR!! This is what i was talkin bout!!

It should be noted that shadows aren't just pure black or darkened local color. At cloudless sunrise, or sunset, look at any white object (white is the best color for this example): Shadows are blue, ligtened area is yellowish-orange.
Shadows are colorless only when there aren't any objects to reflect light. Atmosphere DO reflect light, that's why shadows in sunny days are beautifuly blue. It is actually rare, to have coloress shadow, since every object bounces light.

i just wanted to let you in on a neat little tip--you dont have to shade with just black! you can use dark blue, dark violet, even dark red--all can affect the mood of your work.

A very well-made tutorial, but instead of shading with black, try shading with dark blue or ourple at a low opacity. Using black and white dulls your colorsnand makes everything look really.... weird.

Airbrushing with black and white is the worst possible way to shade. It looks noobish, lazy, and gives everything a fake plastic quality. My advice to people who want to learn how to shade: go watch #Magdaneela's shading tutorial, it's much better.

And actually, the "fuzzy brush" IS the best for shading.

Alright, I just tagged my tutorial with my name for easier finding.
There may be a few things I forgot to mention in it, though. Like textures. Keep textures in mind. Soft shading makes things look soft, for example.
Contrasts are also great. So is color theory.

shading with black is really bad try not to do that!! there are some other tutorials out there abt shading that are better (try @birdy's)

One technique I recommend is coloring the whole picture as a darker color palette(blueish/purple or something), and then color in the lighting with a brighter color palette or just the neutral colors.
