That surprises me: how could they be offended by it? Is there a hidden meaning beyond 'Chinaman' or the 'Road 66' reference? I know there's a heavy History surrounding chinese and american railroad but 'Road 66'? Maybe 'Chinaman' has a negative meaning that I'm not aware of? After all 'Englishman' or 'Frenchman' have never offended anyone...
Yeah - "chinaman" has a negative meaning over here. On the surface it seems silly but it started as a negative slur against Asian immigrants (whether they were from China, Japan, Korea, etc).
I spent almost a year in China and the chineses I worked with were not that picky!I spent almost a year in China and the chineses I worked with were not that picky! My opinion is that when a word has a devious meaning the best thing to do is to use that word again and again until this word loses all meaning and all strength ; that’s the reason why I won’t ask the webmaster (Jetboy?) to change the title even if my first motiviation was not to start a debate about the title! But if it’s such an insult feel free to change it into ‘Beijing connoisseur on Highway 44’. I don’t want any trouble with ‘Road 66’ fans either. To 庐勇: What satirization ?
I guess any portrait generalizing about some nation - not being pathetic and undoubtly gloryfying has to fall for being slightly offensive. Try to imagine - "Amican Guy on the highway" - and some person in cartoonish style. Or Frenchman at Lunch - and some guy eating some typical french food. Such a generalisation especially when done by a talented artist, thus rendering some extra meanings while watching will always be balancing on thin Ice But this is this gallery - some are amazed some are offended. Lets hope noone gets offended deeply Great drawing - One of my favs
Seriously though. What is art for but to provoke an emotion or feeling from the viewer. People are becoming so desensitized today that most of the things they notice anymore are things that they are offended by. Art like this is key in helping people wake up to the world around them. I say, let everything be offensive as possible. After all, the only way they will loose their bite is if they are brought out of the shadows and exposed to the light of day until they evaporate.
ummmm, geez a political hot bed here .... I just wanted to say that you have a delightful grasp of light, tone, volume ... a beautiful piece. I like it.
