I never knew moving could cause so much stress.
Finally, three days after moving here the house was straight, a little cluttered yes but everything was unpacked. I took a breath and sat down on the worn couch that had been moved from storage. I had moved into a second floor of a split level house, it having been my most affordable option. I suddenly realized I hadn't met the neighbors yet and lifted myself back up, brushing out my disheveled hair. I got the door open and made my way down to the backyard.
A woman was outside already, perched on the fence. She was drawn back into a defensive looking position and her eyes were guardedly fixed on her knees. Her long blond-white hair draped partially over her face and went well below her shoulders to her mid back, she seemed young and really pretty but the dark circles under her eyes and her slight shaking made her appear older than she probably was. It looked as if she hadn't noticed me but I heard her speak without moving much more than her mouth, "You must be the new tenant upstairs, I haven't seen you before," as she spoke her gaze remained fixed on her knees. See me? As far as I knew she hadn't looked up since I had arrived. I then made a move to walk towards her but she jolted like I scared her.
''Please just let me get used to you first,'' it sounded like she was almost begging, "You're the first person to move up there in years and I'm not much used to neighbors." She finally looked up at me and I saw her eyes, they were a soft blue green and there was what seemed to be a shine of fear permanently fixed in them. I nodded and backed off to where I had been standing, I already knew she wasn't very used to people, slowly and carefully she stood up and started walking towards me still shaking and pausing uncertainly every so often. I just noticed there were twigs in her hair and leaves stuck to her clothes like she had been climbing.
When she got close enough I pulled out a large stick from her hair, it made her jump but I got it out quickly and showed it to her. "Stick. What's with the leaves? Are you part squirrel or something?" This got a slight smile, "I climb," she smiled sheepishly, "It helps me relax when I'm off the ground." I nodded understanding, it was just like me and my drawing. I used it to cope with new places because I still get slightly nervous. I had in fact came out to sketch the backyard the day before, she had been inside and I hadn't seen her.
She looked up at the sky, "Seems to be past noon," she mumbled mostly to herself, "better go get the laundry so I can hang it up to dry." She walked past me and disappeared into her house, I finally let myself breathe. She was a little strange yes, but maybe she just needed a friend. After having to finish unpacking and being worried half to death by my new neighbor I felt probably more tired then I should have so I retreated into my own house.
