too be honest there is already a scythe more new aged, its owner is in a game called darksider2 the scythe break into 2 for more damage.

In Soul Eater (anime) a character can change into a weapon just like this.(but no skull and bones)

like newmoon just mentioned theres a character on "soul eater" whos name is "black star" and he is a meister who weild there weapons who 'tend' to be living beings and sythes and his weapons are 2 small sythes that are atta.ched by a chain that can extend as far as he desires the sythe's name is sumbaki(at least i think thats how its spelled.....)
