Hm. Study a bit of human and animal anatomy, and free-hand your own characters. Tracing is hardly notable as far as artists are concerned; if you did (and it shows) the least you could've done was make it neater. Or, nothing at all.
For what it's worth, though, the shading's pretty decent. Practice that by drawing human heads and imagine a light shining above. Where it wouldn't shine normally, draw those areas darker.
