There was a certain character about the original Pokemon series that the new series just lacks... maybe it's Ash's involvement in too many Earth-threatening battles without any consolation, or maybe the fact that Ash has been 12 for the past fifteen years, and that Pikachu would be strong enough to beat anything by now, but can't.
