I don't really think public appeal is an accurate gauge of how "good" an artist is. Everyone has different oppinions, so even if some painting or another does not appeal to you, to another it might be a "good" painting. I think the only thing an artist should be judged on is the effort and originality they put into their art. Everyone brings their own personality, and expierience to art. Even if we do not understand their style we must respect thier right to self expression.
