I think what happened here is that the planet is still in orbit around a sun, but it's own gravity and rotation (and therefore, magnetic field) kinda turned off. That way, everything solid and attached to the crust stays in orbit, but everything not anchored would fly off and fall toward the sun, the atmosphere being pushed away by solar winds. The only problem is that if everything falls toward the sun, the polar ice caps are facing the wrong direction. Okay, I'm done.
