RGU is very complex and has many undetones, symbolism, ect. Utena, in both Manga and Anime (minus the abomination that is the movie), she had a near death experiance after her parents died, and was miraculously saved by a man dressed like a prince. Now, he 'licked' her tears way, and gave her a ring telling her to 'never lose your nobility'.
Since that day, Utena vowed to become a noble prince like the one who saved her. Years later she attends Ohtori Academy in search of him, because of letters she recived.
Utena really isn't a lesb!an persay, but just acting as a prince. And also doing, and staying noble. Only in the movie and the manga does Utena and Anthey ever kiss; the manga had it forced by Utena's male love interest, who is also the antagonist, and Utena's reaction spoke volumes. She loves Anthy as a sister, close friend, not a lover. Heck, in the anime she has [s]ex with the antagonist(Anthy's brother).
You should give it a chance, artwork is stunning. Simply beautiful. If the anime has too much Yuri for you, try the manga; 5 volumes of Awesome and only a single light yuri scene at the end :D

In the Anime, there is no kiss. The only heavy yuri is a side story for one of the duelsts. They only show Utena and Anthys deep bond of (imo) platonic love. There are some incestous implications with another duelest and his little sister, and Anthy and her Brother (which is really sad since Anthy is forced).
People describe RGU as the Shoujo verson of Evangelion since they both are, and I qoute, ''A mind F--ck''. lol
