Mario Kat 7: GENGAR'S TIPS by August_Comics
You might have seen the mischeivous brown cat from my 'germs' comic. His name is Gengar. Just sharing a stradegy I sometimes use to avoid a blue shell. In 1st place, always check the bottom screen for opponents items and blue shells. If 2nd place isnt behind you, and youre way ahead, just keep going. :) If you have any Mario Kart 7 questions, just ask! ^-^ This comic also features Isaac Kitty. i kinda do the same thing. I stop my car and wait till the next person passes me. When they do that, the blue shell will go straight to them so you can get in 1st.

what i do is carry a bannana or shell behind me (hold L or Y) and have a mushroom handy, if a blue shell comes i drop the shell and wait for the blue shell to start to drop down and use the mushroom to speed up rite before it hits you. my brother somhow drifted out of the shells way, idk how though, same with red shells. I guess if you dont have mushrooms you could start drifting and wait for the fire at your wheels for the boost and use that as a mushroom.
