My comments:
In keeping with the patchwork theme of this character, I decided to try and draw up the several elements as though they were made of different materials sewn together with a "good enough" attention to detail.
I had a lot of fun interpreting what material textures to use and how they might be drawn.

Years of study and practice. When I took a painting class some 17-or-so years ago, realism was the subject of study, and that's what I practice most.
