The scars on his face are backlash from that moment-When a promise was broken, the fate strings snapped, and literally whipped across his face like wire, leaving the scars.

Sarah has one thick heavy string
He is terrified of touching her because he Doesn't want to see the memory of how that got there.
He acts as her protector/gentleman because he knows she is tied to a fate much bigger (and potentially more dangerous) than she may realize
