The world in which Edward and Agatha live has undergone some strange events, which means that certain places and items that are special to many people (or one person, but it has to be a particularly strong attachment) take on their memories and can essentially transport anyone who gets drawn in into the events of the memory.
If you're too invested in the memory, it's possible to be trapped within it (in a kind of time-loop-type situation)

Edward is a researcher (one of the first and thus a leading expert in his field) who desperately wants to get to the bottom of what caused these "memory hotspots", and Agatha is seemingly interested too (but she sticks around mostly to make sure that Edward doesn't embarass himself too often)
