To begin with, using references is always a good idea, even in cases when you're trying to paint without references, in which cases I'd suggest studying references after you've finished to compare what you got right and wrong, with what you can do next time to improve.
It's alo easier to make a perfect circle by placing a large dot on the screen with the classic brush, then using the scissors tool to resize the circle as needed. Use layers to your advantage.
