"Mak Lampir" is a legendary figure in Indonesian folklore, known as an ancient witch with terrifying powers, often described as an old woman in black robes with a raspy, sinister laugh. According to legend, her real name was Siti Lampir Maimunah, believed to have originated from the slopes of Mount Marapi in West Sumatra. Over time, her story spread and was adapted into Javanese folklore, especially around Mount Merapi. The tale tells of a tragic romance between Mak Lampir and a warrior named Datuk Panglima Kumbang when her lover died, she turned to dark magic to bring him back, which ultimately cursed her into becoming an evil spirit. In modern Indonesian pop culture, Mak Lampir became iconic through the 1998–2005 TV series.
