Instead of trying to create the iris with a base color and white, try to use different values of the same or similar hues. The only pure white thing you should ever put is a highlight, as eyes are not pure white. Same with pure black, you can also use a dark color for a substitute 10, but use an offwhite, blue, purple, or yellow for a 1. Look at oil paintings or your eyes in different lights for what I mean.
