It's taken me a bit of practice and experimenting to get it to look right, but I'm glad you gave it a go. Your side looks great! I think a bit more practice with shading could go a long way, but even the best artists find themselves brainstorming new ideas now and then. Take advantage of the properties of digital art to save your progress before you try something that may or may not work. That way you can be experimental, and if something doesn't work, just discard the changes and try again.
