I don't think he was gonna abstract. He was clealy having a panic attack.
Kinger's loony and clearly suffered some sort of mental break after he lost his wife, since now he can only remember things better in the dark, but he hasn't abstracted.
I think you have to really, really, REALLY go off the deep end before you abstract, because if it was that easy, everyone would've abstracted by now.
