He was a conductor, composer, pianist and humanitarian who wrote the music for West Side Story (watch it if you haven't it's AMAZING)
He was very gay and very pretty and kind of awful at juggling his various different relationships hehe

The way we know SO much about him is because he wrote THOUSANDS of letters during his lifetime, and thanks to the lack of technology throughout most of his life, his correspondents retained them and passed them on to the Leonard Bernstein Office when it was founded.
Most of them are in the Library of Congress and can be viewed for free online!

I transcribed a SHİT ton of them (before I realised they were already done on the website :sob:) and good lord is there some good material.
His first letter to David Oppenheim (one of his closest friends and a lover of his in the 40s) was three words written in pencil on the back of a postcard: 'are you dead?', the context being that they'd met at the Tanglewood Music Festival that summer and promised to write to each other, and then promptly forgot.
