I fnd that perfectionism is something that works best when kept on a bridle, but not completely stopped.
It's good that a part of you wants everythint to be "perfect", but it's that you learn to keep it under your control, and not let it control you.
Embrace the desire to do better, and be better, without pushing it on yourself, or on others.

I've never had a good mental head space (it got really bad once) and it still aint great
so now my perfectionism is worse because I beat myself up aboout it whenever I get something wrong
which is why I'm trying to get it under control..

@Spoopy_Witch
I think maybe one large reason for that is we tend to compare ourselves to others. We think "if only I had so-and-so's hair" _or_ "such-and-such talent" _or_ other forms of self-degradation, and we tend to forget the things we can do/have, because of things we can't do/have. In many cases, these are things that we simply don't have yet, either because we're too young, or our life circumstances won't allow it.

(Continued)
The trick is to convince yourself that you are good enough as you are, while having the quiet assursnce that you will still grow to be better. It required patience, but you'll someday discover more about yourself than you thought was ever there. But that discovery requires work and discipline.
Keep working at it. recognizing these things about yourself is strong evidence that you're moving in the right direction.
