That description is a good thought experiment, and it is correct in many cases. Propaganda can be very difficult to defeat.
Though in defense of humanity, animals think the same way as well. Predators don't see other animals that want to live, they just see lunch on legs. Similarly I once heard a story of a caged monkey near an irport that would screech and rattle the cage whenever an airplane flew by, -probably- thinking that such behavior is what scares the noisy airplanes away.
