Oh yes, i get that feeling every time when talking to family members. I can literally never say no to them -_-

I've heard the term "niceness culture" be thrown around in some circles in recent months. There's a difference between being nice, and being kind, and we seem to have created this cultural stygma that -if you're not nice, no one will like you-, which isn't really true.

The niceness being refered to here is more of a passive fear to hurt someone else' feelings. It seems to have its roots in the fear of being called names like bigot or ******, or a host of other words that lost their meaning.

Indeed. I often feel like I have to walk around eggshells here. I had a bried dialog dispute with someone a while back regarding identity politics. It seems to me that in some cases it is considered "bigotry" to suggest that someone identify as "A kind and decent person". I replied to that with a somewhat insincere apology, saying "I thought so-and-so was a kind and decent person. I apologize if I was wrong in my assessment." Then offered to withdraw my compliment.

In hindsight, that last bit may have been a bit harsh, but I think I got the messege out clear enough.

I can't fault anyone for who we have become, but this generation is being taught what-to-think, and not how-to-think.
