Being a Courtjester was a bit of a wild card as a career (in cases where it was voluntary). Depending on how much good will they have with their audience, which was basically a volatile currency for them, they could often times get away with being obnoxious to whomever they please, even toward high ranking officials. The use of face covering was to amuse the audience and protect their identity.

I don't actualky know how accurate all of that is. I'm just throwing it out there.
