When Penelope was like 12, it was cold and there was a frozen lake, (Penelope's the adventurous and reckless type, she never rlly sees danger)
but she went to play on it and encouraged her younger brother to play on it, and he was basically like "no...thats a stupid idea"
but eventually, since hes a young dum dum impressionable kid, he eventually gave in and went out to play on the lake

the ice broke and they both fell in
Penelope survived...but her brother drowned
and um...
lets just her parents had mixed reactions
her mom was angry and blamed Penelope
and her dad was devastated but didn't blame her
this caused LOTS of tension and arguing
her mom always would remind her of what she did
and that would pīss the dad tf off
so eventually they divorced and took Penelope :)
Penelope now feels intense guilt and has a fear of large bodies of water :)
