I can't say that I like anxiety as a character.. nor by design. Though I think that was the intention. Anxiety was intended to be an anti-villain, which is what she is to all of us. Anxiety is a self preservation system.. that unfortunately holds us down, and keeps us from flying.. or crashing and burning. Does that sound about right?
anxiety can do many things. it protects people, restrains them, and sometimes even peer pressures people to try something new. your statement is correct, id say. anxiety as a character (being the antagonist) was self conflicted, and she thought she didnt need help. this goes along with anxiety in real life. anxiety was TRYING to protect Riley, but only made things worse because she believed she could improve without help.
her design is all about making the viewer uncomfortable. wide eyes to represent worry, caution, and curiosity. her hair represents the somewhat disorganization and slight derangement. (there are other features of her design im too lazy to type) i like anxiety as a character but she isnt the best in the movie.
I think we as a people would do well to have more open conversations about our concerns and anxieties, with a little less teasing and taunting toward said vulnerabilities. That's the thing I like about art in any form really. When done correctly, it can open doors to conversations that need to be had.
