Obsidian Basilisk, also known as Mirelisk or Tar Dragon, are native to a region known as The Silica Sub-Tropics.
At maturity, they can grow close to 9m (30ft) in length, weigh in over 2 tons, and have thick hide that can withstand scalding heat for several minutes.
With a fight-or-flight response, their pores release a chemical compound that combusts when exposed to oxygen, raising their external temperature which super heats their plating, and assimilates any silicate material stuck to it.
At first hatchling, they do not have their signature plating, but naturally aquire it over time as molten material sticks to their fiery hide. They usually reside near mud volcanoes and tar pits within the region. When they need to cool off, they may dash toward the nearest body of water, resulting in their plates crystalizing.

Woah you're great at world building. It almost sounded like a real reptile!
But with my world building it's just humans died from an apocalypse and there's only animals left XD

Woah!
This is so well done!!

You mentioned that it sometimes needs to cool off. How hot does it have to be to reach that point? Would it need to do so after heating up its scales?
This has an amazing amount of detail. I enjoy how much thought you put into it.
Also good color palette. :thumbsup:

Thank you for the compliment. : ) I've played a lot of Monster Hunter, and the development team for that game series goes deep into real world biology when creating their creatures and environments, so I've been wanting to practice that kind of world building as well. It's part of a life long childhood dream of mine to be part of the art team on a video game.

@PremonitionofWinter
Iguess it may vary from individuals of the species, but I suppose the simplest answer is "once the creature becomes too uncomfortable, either from too much ecposure the elements such as tar pits, mud volcanoes, direct sunlight or their fight/flight response sets them on fire for too long. Looking at them from a game developer perspective, this was intended as a boss/mini boss mechanic as well.

For example, you encounter one in battle. Shortly after the encounter starts, it -enrages-, and becomes vulnerable to player attacks while it's plates are heated and soft. After some time passes it retreats, and the player needs to hunt or pursue the creature to a nearby body of water where it's plates crystalize and become resistant to slashing or piercing type attacks, but vunerable to bludgeoning or percussive type attacks where the player is able to break its plates off.

I could take it further with elemental ttack types where attacking with fire type weapons/spells will heat up and soften the plates, or attacking with water type weapons/spells crystalizes it. I think that would open up a variety of single player and multiplayer strategies.
It's been a childhood dream of mine to be part of a videogame development team, and with how accessabe indi-games are bec9ming to develope, I figured it might be fun to practice some some world building.

@bbogumi
That could make for an interesting idea. The growth cycle of this creature has the makings of a pokemon evolution cycle.

@The_Adjudicator THIS. IS. LE. AWESOME!!!!! i love dragons and lizard-type creatures! :D

if it's a basilisk, can it run on water? the anatomy made me think otherwise, idk.

@_-foxylily-_
I don't think they'll be able to run on water, especially at full maturity.
That is an interesting idea though. Maybe as hatchlings they can sprint fast enough on their webbed feet to briefly run on top of water. At full maturity though, they become too slow and cumbersome to pull that off.

@The_Adjudicator ah, ok. i thought so. you know, they kinda remind me of monitor lizards in a few ways. oh, and i love the plating!
