I don't know about eyes but sometimes I use classic bristle for fur. But irl I use a thicker marker/pencil, but not to thick.
Hope it helps:)

As far as advice goes, the best I have is to just study what you want to draw. if you can get a good detailed macro-photograph of a cat's eye, and try to redraw it as close to the original photo as possible, you'll be doing exactly what I did to learn. That's what I was taught to do in my painting class.

Likewise, I was surprised by how much I learned about eyes when I drew a side-by-side realism eye (first without reference, then one with reference). It may be a good idea to split a painting down the middle, and one one side draw from memory, then later on the other side, use a reference to see what details you missed before.
