Tropes are narative patterns often used by writers to get the plot moving by stirring up some drama, or manipulate the viewer's emotions in such a way that it captures their attention. In this case (if you choose to go with the martyre trope), you get the viewers invested in this kind heartd character, then rip them away tragically by some antagonist so that the viewer -WANTS- to see them avenged later down the road. It adds to viewer engagement.
