You could tell from this exchange of dialogue that there was some animosity between Scar and his older brother. He knew he stood no chance in a fair match against his older brother. I speculate that his titular scar came as a result of some previous attempt to usurp power from Mufasa, who then later made that scar his moniker, one that stuck as a constant derogative reminder of his failure.
