The checkered background was used as a grid to more easily guage proportions. A couple weeks ago, Colors updated with a new grid layer mod, and this project was started long before that feature was added in the update.

I could give lots of tips. but Here's a few good tips for starters:
Practic makes perfect. Don't expect to become a great artist right away. It'll take time, but if you love to draw, you'll go as far as your ambitions can carry you.
Learn from the artists that inspure you most. Study their work, and find your own way to make art of that quality.
Train yourself to be patient. The best art takes time for quality.
And finally, make friends. Lot's of friendly folks here.

Lots and lots of practice. I've been using Colors digital art software for over 10 years, and have grown very familiar with digital art tools and techniques. Don't be afraid to be experimental with things. You'll be surprised what works. Use references. Drawing real life objects ( #StillLife) is a good way to practice realistic painting. Looking at, and studying objects is a great way to learn how to give them details. Take art classes in school if you can. > Keep trying.

I don't know if I can teach you, but I can advise.

Firstly, you're not terrible, you're just inexperienced. It's like everyone always says: practice makes perfect.

Secondly, learn to develope your patience. Plan to make some paintings a long-term project. Tackle it in little bits at a time.

Thirdly, use references. Study pictures related something you want to draw/paint, and try to match the details you see as best you can.

Lastly, Learn from your favorite artists.

You could some day. Keep practicing. It'll take time, a lot of it maybe, but I'm sure you'll grow as an artist in time. Don't be afraid to take art classes in your later school years. And don't be afraid to learn from your favorite artists.
