I DON'T LIKE CHANGE! by Mewsea

First drawing on the Switch! Luci pretty much sums up my feelings, haha...

Alright, so. This is about to get long and personal... I apologize in advance.

As I'm sure some of you are aware, I'm strictly a 3DS user... With the 3DS servers shutting down, I initially thought to buy ColorsLive on the Switch and the problem would be solved, but... Well. Learning to draw on the Switch has certainly been a learning curve, one that I am still trying to process and figure out after 10 hours of playtime.

Now, usually, this would be great for me. I LOVE a challenge... But sometimes you just wanna do some quick art and be satisfied with it, without spending 4+ hours on it... Such was the case here.

I'm not going to go into detail why this took so long (spoiler: I had to constantly zoom out and the brushes aren't easy to sketch with) but...I'm starting to think this whole Switch art thing isn't for me... So.

This isn't goodbye. I could never say goodbye to this place. I'm way too comfortable here. This is my comfort zone: the place where I feel I can draw freely and nobody will judge me for it... (Which is also why it hurts to see so many kind, talented and aspiring artists leave the community because of the shutdown... I mean, I didn't even notice until a short while ago that FOUR of my paintings were superliked! I'm very lucky to have found a community who is so supportive of my art.)

This isn't goodbye, but... It is a wake-up call for me, I think. It's time that I move out of my comfort zone and try my hand at other (possibly bigger and better) things.

I'll still draw on here from time to time, despite my distaste for it (because I'm stubborn like that), and I'll still respond to comments... Just don't expect anything TOO serious from me. (Not that I was ever TOO serious to begin with, haha!)

Well... Anyway. There you have it. I just thought I'd let you know, since I like you guys (for some reason).

Thank you for everything. <3

Yeah, I understand. Although I had tried to find other drawing apps on the Switch BEFORE finally finding out about that ver. (typing this from my 3DS) I think it may have been a little easier for me since I have a drawing tablet, but the surface is scratchy and sometimes I have problems with it and Krita so despite the res, I like these better! DW tho, you'll get the hang of it eventually. We believe in you!!!
Also, both sides have their pros and cons to consider as well, w/ the 3DS being more portable and the camera features and the Switch w/ more tools so I think the 2 work better as a team effort rather then 1 over the other, ya know?

Oh and hey, one more thing rq,...
soooo, I just stopped by the Colors Discord today and they're figuring out how to keep the 3DS servers up after the shutdown!!!! Ain't that great? So that means that if you still haven't figured out the Switch enough to your liking, you can always check 'em out, check out a tutorial, aaaaaaannnnnd. . . . .
Prrrreeeeeeteeeeennnnnd (hint, hint, wink, wink,)

as an artist who found Colors! via the switch, i have gotten used to it although i don't like sketching on here since it's tedious and time consuming, making me rush and ending up with me hating the sketch, not wanting to draw. on a good day i am able to sketch the way i want :sob: my question is what made the 3ds version easier to draw with on Colors? (just found your account, love ur art btw!!)

i couldnt get used to the switch version either
but if you own a tablet the pc beta is definetly worth looking into

hopefully they will find a way to continue support of 3ds colors live

I'm so glad you aren't leaving for good. I'm losing so many of my artist inspirations as it is...!
And, as a former 3Ds user myself, the switch was a learning process. It took me I think a fair amount of time to get used to it. I'd definitely recommend the sketch brush. It's one I like using for quick drawings.

Anyway, glad to hear you plan on staying, and hope the Switch Version gets better for you!

Good luck on any art venture you decide on!

Yikes, that sounds like a dreadful experience. I have Colors Live now but haven't drawn on it yet so that'll be interesting when I do TuT And I am glad to hear you'll be sticking around, albeit painfully. Seeing so many people I know deciding to leave, I'll be devastated if that included you too. ToT

On a brighter note, I have been seeing Hazbin Hotel. I can now name these characters >u< I can see why Alastor has grabbed your interest. He kinda has a way of always being interesting, powerful, and the center of attention whenever he makes an appearance.

@Lorcu I've been practicing on the Switch, and I have to admit, I AM getting better at it... It's easier to sketch now, but I don't think it will ever be the same as sketching on paper or on the 3DS (or on certain drawing tablets)... It just isn't as precise. I blame it on the screen/console. I don't think the Switch was made to be drawn on, because its screen isn't as sensitive as the one on the 3DS (like you can use a pencil on a 3DS, but the Switch won't detect the touch of a pencil).

@AtomicNomic Haha, I hope so. Thank you!

@Lexiplexi28 Yeah, I was looking into that! But it just seems like so much work... I don't know if it's worth it. Especially now that I'm getting used to the Switch and still on the fence about buying a drawing tablet, which would probably be easier and more efficient in the long-run... But idk. I don't really have experience in this type of thing, other than drawing on paper or on the 3ds, haha. It's definitely still a possibility, though, so thank you for letting me know about it!

@alrightymoose Well, well! As I was telling Lorcu (PoodleKingdom) earlier, I think it's the screens... Compared to the Switch, the 3DS allowed for more precise lines... It was almost just like drawing with pencil and paper.

I even tested this several times. On paper, I got the exact line I wanted in one stroke. It's a little harder on the 3DS, but definitely still doable through the use of axillary lines.... But on the Switch? Man... I gotta go over the lines multiple times to get it evened out.

I did discover, though, that it's easier to sketch with the Soft Brush first, then go over it with the Sketch Brush on another layer... And finally, I could hopefully(?) go over it a 3rd time with a smaller brush.

The Switch just isn't very lineart-friendly, I'm afraid. Especially when you use a style that's heavily reliant on lines to convey shapes (such as cartoons and anime). That's probably why you and I struggle to sketch on it. Because you and I have a similar style, hehe. And also why it's mostly cartoon/anime-style 3ds users who can't adapt to the Switch, who have left after the Nintendo 3DS servers were disconnected.

And thank you for saying you love my art! I love yours too! I gotta since I said we have similar styles, right? ;D

@Prisma_Nano Oh, the Colors devs have definitely already found a way! Indeed they have... I would tell you here, but I don't know if it's a good idea to. Instead, please visit their discord for more information.

I'll keep the PC beta in mind... Thank you!! Is that what you usually draw with nowadays, Prisma?

@-Vero- Thank you, Vero! I already explained it in the above comments, but I find it easier to sketch with the soft brush first... For me, anyway. Everyone's different. I also like to start off with a really thick brush and go over them with smaller brushes on multiple layers for more precise lines.

Anyway, I'm glad you're sticking around too! ^o^

10 Apr, 2024, 7:52 pm

@Mewsea ohhh ok!! i was wondering if that was the case. i'll have to try the soft brush technique you were talking about! and thank you!! yes, my style is heavily based on how lines turn out which makes it muy deficil lol. thanks for your answer!! :DD

@Puzzled I'm so glad you're staying too, omg! I feel like I already lost a good chunk of the people I follow... :'0

I predict that, Colors Live will be easier for you to use... A lot of your art is lineless and uses colors/shades to depict shape... So you don't have to worry about being exact. That said, I haven't experimented with any lineless drawings on the Switch yet... So I can't say for certain.

Also, YEEESSSSS! You've seen Hazbin Hotel!? How far are you in? What do you think? Do you like the songs? XD

And yeahhhhhh... Alastor is, um...Alastor. I hate that I like him, but I do. I can't help it. Dx You gotta admit his deer ears are cute, though... His personality definitely ain't cute. But he's interesting.

Puzzled

11 Apr, 2024, 9:39 am

@Mewsea: Very interesting prediction! I'll definitely let you know how your hypothesis holds up... later! Right now, I wanna catch up on some games and continue shiny hunting Arceus. After everything I've been hearing on Live, I just don't want to be stressed right now! XD
Oh and yes, I've finished all 8 episodes! Surprised by how few episodes there are and by the cliff hanger for season 2! The songs are very good and addicting. I still have the "You're a Loser, baby" playing in my head, among others! As for the story, while the beginning was... rough, it came together very well at the end.

You're right Alastor is interesting. He never fails to be intriguing whenever he makes an appearance. Even when he lost to Adam! His design is very fun too. I can see now why you like drawing him (like his hair and ears)! No shame on who you like. I love seeing your interests and how you portray them. Just... don't make any deals with this one! >o<

@Mewsea
Sad that you won't be posting as much here, but happy you're not leaving. I've got 120 hours playtime on Colourslive and I still am not used to it. The reason I'm always doing pixel art!!

If you do have or get your hands on it, I'd recommend the SonarPen. Makes things a tiny bit easier and more paper skectch-like!

( I had a listen to some Hazbin Hotel music. My friends begged me to )

But like I said, I've played Colourslive for over a year and I'm not used to it! IT'S BLIMMIN' HARD...

Mewsea

12 Apr, 2024, 10:04 pm

@alrightymoose You're welcome!
Oh, another thing that made the 3DS more convenient than the Switch was that it had two screens. So I didn't have to constantly zoom out to see the full picture. It was very useful.

@Puzzled Oooh, you're shiny hunting Arceus!? Good luck! I remember finding my shiny Arceus at 4,700 resets. I thought he'd never appear... Does that mean you found shiny Shaymin and Darkrai?

I also wanna shiny hunt some older mons before Pokemon Bank closes for good. So, I'm thinking about going after Poipole and Type Null next in Ultra Sun.

And yeah, I knowww! I wish there was more than 8 episodes of Hazbin Hotel. *sobs* But I guess that's what happens when you have such a small group of people working on everything... The beginning was rough, but it definitely got better. And the songs! Easily one of the best things about the show. They're so fun to listen to.

Alastor is so fun to draw, definitely! I LOVE his design. And thank you! He's not getting my soul, that's for sure. He might win my heart, though, lmao.

@Lytalia-Riolu I've been wondering about that! I didn't get the SonarPen because I bought the digital copy (because I thought I would use it a lot), but I was thinking... Would the SonarPen make drawing lines easier if it was calibrated to the Switch? I wanted to buy it to test it out, but for some reason, buying it separately is more expensive than buying the physical copy of the game, with the pen included!? I guess I could buy it with the game, but it feels like I'm paying more for something that should cost less, idk.

It's definitely easier to make straighter lines with the pixel brush, so I can see where you're coming from.

What was your verdict on the songs? XD It's okay, you can be honest if you didn't like them.

@Mewsea: Oh, yeah I forgot to let you know. I FINALLY caught a shiny shaymin! A while ago. New Years Day. Sorry! ! got so used to running away that I was panicking so much when it showed up. All my preparations went out the window >u< I'm skipping Darkrai to go straight at Arceus. I feel that it's an easier shiny to spot quickly, and I just wanna toss a master ball at something :3

The songs really are very good! Favorite is easily the Alastor vs Lucifer song. Sounds good, looks good, and love seeing both trying to one-up the other. Love both Alastor and Lucifer <3

I didn't know that the pokebank was still up. If I do shiny hunt on my 3DS, it would probably be for shiny Celebi on Cystal which I didn't know was possible until you so thanks! Best of luck on your shiny hunts. Hope they show up a lot sooner than mine XP

They're very good songs :) loved them!

14 Apr, 2024, 5:25 pm

@Puzzled Wooooo! I'm so glad you were able to finally find shiny Shaymin and catch it! Did you catch it in the ball you wanted? I think shiny Darkrai is easier to spot than Arceus, but sure. XD I also think shiny Darkrai fits the Master Ball better, with its color scheme.

Oooh, that's one of my favorite songs too! Awesome. Lucifer is my second fave after Alastor, and yes, the song is very funny. :D

Thanks, Puzzled! Best of luck to you as well!

@Lytalia-Riolu Awesome! :D Me too!

Puzzled

15 Apr, 2024, 8:43 am

@Mewsea: Oh really? I just assumed Arceus was easier to spot since there is a large close up of Arceus before the battle properly begins. So I can press A, fade-to-black, check the close-up, and reset before even hearing the cry. Who knows, l'm still new to shiny hunting. But you are right, Darkrai does fit the master ball more. hmm, either I'll get a second master ball or maybe try to catch Arceus with a repeat ball? Decisions, decisions...

And I settled on using a heal ball for my shiny shaymin. Would have looooved a friend ball but I'm still happy ^u^

And thanks Mewsea! After that shaymin hunt, I might need it! XP

Mewsea

17 Apr, 2024, 12:00 am

@Puzzled Haha, you have a point. But you wouldn't believe how many times I thought I missed shiny Arceus because of the slight color difference. I don't see yellow too well... I caught my shiny Arceus in a Level Ball. :D Took 23 balls! It was a close call. I almost thought I had to Master Ball it.

I thought about using a Friend Ball on Shaymin before I decided a Love Ball would be better suited. I always wanted to catch one of the small, cute mythicals in a Love Ball. I would've preferred to use it on Celebi since it shares the same pink colors, but VC Crystal doesn't transfer like that, unfortunately.

I started my hunt for shiny Type: Null and I'm at 200 SRs already. Gonna try to do 100 a day.

@Mewsea Hey, it's alright. just thought I'd let'cha know is all. I don't really have any experience w/ it, myself tbh. I saw a simple enough video from the beginning of the year on how to do it, but with how fast they change certain things up on how to do it, there's a fair chance that it's become outdated information rn, rip....
Oh well, :woman_shrugging: good luck on it whenever you decide todo it!!! I'm just gonna play the games I've already got on it until I'm ready to work on it, myself.

Quickly looking it up, the video was from "Below Average Gaming" on YouTube. Hopefully he makes a new video on it next year. :crossed_fingers:

Puzzled

18 Apr, 2024, 8:44 am

@Mewsea: Really? Because I had the same issue with shaymin. I usually had to double check and see if that shaymin was green or cyan. The extra time for the sparkles help sooo much!

Oh, the level ball on arceus is a good idea. And in 23 balls, that's impressive! However, I decided to stick with the master ball on arceus and try for a dusk ball on darkrai. I just rarely use master balls for anything now and one for Arceus seems appropriate. :3

Again best of luck on your shiny Type: Null! I... have already lost track of my SRs but I do know I'm 7 hours in! XP
