basically, modding your 3ds puts custom firmware on it. this means you can do tons of things on the console, breaking it wide open (software-wise)! for examples, theres an app called Anemone that lets u install custom themes into ur home menu, even make ur own with outside software. theres Checkpoint, which lets you back up all of your save data for digital games and physical carts! theres FBI, which lets you install other homebrew apps as well as 3ds rom files (.CIA) to put tons of games on ur console,,,, for free >:]
theres also the NDS Forwarder which does the same thing but for games (.NDS files) from the older DS consoles, aka DSi, DS lite, etc!
u can also install smth called NTR Boot on the New 3DS/2DS systems, this lets u stream wirelessly to a computed with a pc program named Snickerstream!!

you can do waaaay more than what ive listed, this barely scratches the surface :3c this is all just what i personally use most often on my own hacked n2ds, along with a couple more things ehehe. hope u dont mind the ramble im just passionate abt 3ds stuff lol

as long as you have an SD card reader (specifically microsd for New 3DS/2DS) and a computer, its pretty easy if u follow the guides on the site 3ds.hacks.guide :D its how i hacked mine, ive done it on multiple consoles lol

for new 3ds consoles specifically, unfortunately you have to unscrew the backplate of the console every time u need sd card access, which also leads to exposing the battery iirc so its not the best idea to leave it constantly off. its possible to modify the backplate to always have the sd card exposed but thats not always the easiest nor the safest thing to do hghgdjsd
a new 2ds would be the best due to not having that issue unless you use the three-d feature constantly :p (had to type weird bc number censoring argghh)

yea its safe to have wifi activated, nintendo is barely moderating anything 3ds related anymore and since theyre shutting down servers in april 2024, they couldnt ban u even if they wanted to. the server shutdown wont affect much btw, theres lots of stand-in services/revival projects (like pretendo) thatre aiming ro bring back servers after the shutdown :3c

oop sorry i didnt get your ping... yeah colors 3d is unfortunately shutting down april 2O24, the switch version/colors live will remain intact tho so dw abt that if u have one
like i said, the devs are looking into using a fanmade service called pretendo to allow reconnecting to the gallery after the shutdown. it'll only be available to hacked 3ds's (or emulation of them via emulators like citra or maybe bizhawk) but its better than nothing
pretendo itself is also looking to keep up online servers for tons of other games on the system too, as well as servers for the wii u. they're even reviving miiverse on both consoles!! i'd definitely look into pretendo if you ever mod a (x)ds system, as well as some other alternatives i think are out there :]
