Not a bad first try. As long as you're willing to keep trying, you'll have it figured out soon enough.
If you'd like more advice, there's something called "The Golden Ratio" It's more advanced, but to put it simply, you use one color as the base, and another color to compliment it.
Take for example, this cat. What I would have done is make it a deep midnight-purple as the base color, and add bright orange stripes to compliment the darker purple hues. You could also make the ear tips orange.
