It seems Mark is playing a prank on his friends (Tom and Tim). Mark was reading a scary story as his friends checked their tents.

Upon noticing Mark suddenly vanished:

Tom: "I told you to not let him tell a scary story, Tim. He pranks us every time."

Tim: "Mark! Where did he go!? This isn't funny Mark! Mark!?"

Mark laughs quietly within nearby bushes. He is awaiting the perfect jump scare moment.
