Little did anyone know... James McCloud did not die that day, he would support his son from the shadows, only showing himself in greatest times of need.

It's basically implied that James might be still alive and not a phantom that only Fox sees in some last bits of Star Fox SNES, Star Fox 64, Star Fox Assault, Star Fox Command and Star Fox Zero. Especially Zero where (SPOILERS) Andross say that he should've stayed dead while giving chase to James. We never know. Maybe one day they reveal that he either alive or that's his spirit that is helping his son.
