This is just me personally but when I shade, unless I'm going for super cartoonish, I use the soft brush and I put it on a very, very low opacity. I take a color that is just a few shades darker than my main color, and go over it repeatedly, slowly making the color more intense. Once that is done, for the darkest areas I set the color a little bit darker and repeat the process, slowly making the brush smaller as the details get finer. I do the same for the highlights. Don't use black to shade unless something is gray, and only use either if what you are highlighting is very shiny or reflective. If something is shiny or reflective, then I will sometimes use the hard brush instead of the soft.

I second @KiraFaye04's advice. That's how I do shading.
If I may put in my own two cents, I'd say add the shading on a seperate layer. If you go outside the lines, it's easier to erase the excess without harming the original by using layers.
