It's always good to practice. That's how you learn new things : )
If you're open to advice, you get a more smooth blend if you lighten and darken using soft brushes. The lighten and darken brush tools are also very useful. The size and opacity siders work with these tools as well. When shading, try using cool colors like blue and purple, and when adding lights, try using warm colors like orange or yellow.
